One of the big benefits of joing WAMAS is trading and buy reef equipment and livestock. Did you know that right now there are several people giving away corals in the members only section of this board? People are also giving away macro algae!

If you invest $20 in a membership, you will probably get it back with free or inexpensive corals in less than 2 weeks. Of course you also get discounts to the good salt water fish stores in the area.

I just thought I would throw that out there for all the lurking people that are wondering if it is worth spending $20 on a membership. It is the best $20 you will spend if you are a reef tank or saltwater fish tank owner.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My first purchase on here was used skimmer I got for $200. It would've cost me $600 new, so I figure I made back many many years of my membership off that just that first purchase. There's a reason why hundreds of people renew every year, it saves you money in the long run.

by far the best $20 I've spent in this expensive and addicting hobby..

I totally agree with quazi, also like to add to your post about the members of this forum who are very helpful to eachother wether setting up a new system, building new sump or tank stand or help in move of the tank; they are there to help each other out, and everyone just makes you feel like you are part of a one big family; a WAMAS family :)

... don't forget about advice to buy or not buy that particular piece of equipment. Hundreds if not thousands of dollars saved by finding out something is junk so you buy the right thing the first time.

So you're saying that I shouldn't have just a prizm skimmer on my 300gal tank?

If you can get to the buy/sell/trade forum, you will see the postings for them. You must be a full, paid member to access that part of this board.

I'm certainly glad I joined. The advice is priceless. And the freebies/discounts are always nice.

I hope individuals interested in joining Wamas, but not sure what they'll get for their money, will read my post in the "Welcome to WAMAS: FAQ / FYI / Hobby News" forum entitled "WYS is WYG with Wamas, unless you are a paid member!".

All the secret places available to paid Wamas members are detailed here.

I agree with everything mentioned already. The 10% off at a LFS and the savings in items offered for sale in the members section is well worth the $20.

But to me the WAMAS member network is priceless. When you have a few thousand dollars worth of stuff in a glass box it is nice to have a network of friends out there. From what I have seen, no matter what the problem is, if you post a need for help, you will have it.

When the big storms rolled through earlier in the year, several people lost power and members jumped in offering generators and battery air pumps.

Just recently, a member had the corner of his tank separate! Within hours he had offers of help.

That sense of security is worth $20 to me.

The #1 best advice given to me by my brother (has a 300g and been in the hobby 15 years) was to join a club right away.

It has:

1. Saved me hundreds of $'s just from advice

2. Received wayyyyyyyyy more corals than I knew what to do with when I first joined - either through purchasing them and getting a few extra freebies, FRAGFEST - if you haven't gone - GO.

3. Saved me a ton of money buying used equiptment.

4. The knowledge shared is priceless.

5. Met people to hang out with.

6. Have seen some AWESOME tanks.

7. Saved money on everything we have done in this hobby.

I can't imagine not being part of a club and paying retail for everything, learning the hard way with a lot of different stuff and having to spend extra money to get out of it, ect. ect.

Its a no-brainer if you ask me.

I give 'em away all the time!

You're in. Welcome to WAMAS!

I live a few miles away from you, near the fairgrounds in Manassas. Drop by next week and I'll hook you up with a couple of frags.

Watch out for this guy. If you stop by his place, couple of things will most likely happen: 1) You most likely end up leaving his home with more coral frags for free than you expected. 2) Because he's also quite knowledgeable though he will be modest and tell you otherwise, he'll give you far more valuable advice than you even thought of asking. Oh, I almsot forgot. As devious as YbeNormal is, he can be a pretty decent guy.

Thanks James. I was actually going to give him your address and meet him there since I have your house keys. He can then have as many coral frags as he wants--maybe even a few free fish!
