yesterday the female of my flame wrasse pair jumped because i was too lazy and stupid to cover a small opening that had been fine for a year now. for my complacency i have been punished and i will no better next time. you always end up learning the hard way in this hobby

I have now had 3 jumpers from my tank. I lost a Lubbock's fairy wrasse a few months ago, a brand new firefish leapt out, and my midas blenny just jumped out a couple of days ago as well. Not sure how to combat this on my system, though, I may just build a fence that goes straight up to the lights, but feel that this will lock in a lot of heat.

I'm sorry you lost your fish. I stopped keeping a cover on my tank because of heat, but haven't really worried about it due to my fish not spending time in the top 3rd of the tank.

thanx for that i am trying to get over it. i just lost my lubbocks as well in such a short bit of time

I had a flame swim up the pvc into the HOB and then he jumped out. PVC is now covered with pond netting. Two McCoskers have jumped through the eggcrate I have on top, as well as a firefish (who luckily I was able to throw back in). I'm just going to have to stay away from smaller wrasses, I guess, and keep my fingers crossed that the firefish will stay put. Wish we could explain that the grass is NOT greener.... Sorry about the flame - females are so hard to find, and they're such pretty fish!

i gotta find one or two so the male doesnt lose his color. he is a supermale now so i want to keep it that way

Jamal,

Sorry to hear your fish jumped ship.

You said there's only a "small opening" which your fish found and jumped through. Do you have most of the tank covered with eggcrate or some other barrier? If so, what was the small opening and what ideas do you have to prevent a reoccurance? I don't have any jumpers, but I'd like to learn what the weak points are that fish can exploit to earn their "freedom."

I know how u feel. I lost my peppermint hog last week due to laziness.

I just built one of these yesterday. NO MORE JUMPERS!!! :bb:

My beautiful 4" black false percula female (part of a $250 mated pair from The Marine Scene) jumped out of my 75G display tank....it has a full hood, but she found the 3" x 8" opening in the back.

So add me to the list of ppl wanting to know about your screen, Chris!

i would also like to know since eggcrate which is what i have seems to be insufficient. did you just cut the screen with pliers to fit the openings or something of that nature? i was thinking of getting another big piece of eggcrate and cutting it to fit such that the holes will be half as big. does anyone half a fool proof method of some sort?

I tried doubling the eggcrate, but it cut down the light too much. I ended up covering the second set of eggcrate with pond netting, and use it when I introduce a new fish only until I'm fairly sure that it will stay put (for at least a while).

The 6-line wrasse in my frag tank ran out of flatworms to eat, saw one in my 58, and tried to make the jump. He didn't quite make it... but he was flushed with honors for trying!
