newfish May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 Anyone ever use purple up to help accelerate Coraline Growth or any other products. I have some purple on my rocks but nothing growing on the tank yet. http://www.fish.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=710013 Any negatives, positives, is it safe, anyone have any extra that they dont need. Thanks Josh
lancer99 May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 Some people swear by it, but I think the consensus is that it's a gimmick. There was speculation in the ReefCentral Chemistry forum that it was just powdered, indissoluble calcium carbonate. -R
newfish May 2, 2008 Author May 2, 2008 This is all that I can find about whats in it. Iodine Replenishment: PurpleUp replenishes iodine, an essential element for coralline algae tissues that quickly becomes depleted in closed systems. Easy to use. One bottle of Purple Up replaces the typical multi-product recipe for successful coralline algae growth favored by advanced aquarists. Contains Super Sea Calcium, a natural calicum derived from pristine tropical oceans. Treats up to 4730 gallons. Dunno. It has pretty good reviews from marine depot but I would rather hear testimonials from here
Leishman May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I paid $75 for a bottle when it 1st came out and never opened the bottle. I gave it away (to Doug) as I had NO interest in putting it my tank after looking at the bottle. PS I paid $75 for raffle tickets @ MACNA and I won the stupid purple up
extreme_tooth_decay May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I used a half bottle a few years ago and was satisfied. It did seem to kick start the coraline. tim

I guess another question I should ask is how long should it take to get coraline growth although almost all the rocks that I have bought have been purchased from other members and has had coraline on them already.
dbartco May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 What the heck, I dumped it into the tank. I figured all it contained was kalk and iodine. Never saw any change, but never dosed very much at a time. Hey, it was free! I would just go the kalk route and not worry about the Purple up or iodine supplements.
SkiCurtis May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I tried it once on a 75 gallon to jump start some coraline. it seemed to give the coraline a boost. Now i use some 2 part (alk+Calcium) really 3 parts (magnesium). from bulkreefsupply.com Curtis
The Kerrnel May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I call it "tank steroids". bamainva uses it and I swear his 12g tank has twice the growth that my 10g tank does.
Hilary May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I heard that it will jack up nitrates? I can't confirm, but that was the advice I received from somebody (and was seconded by somebody else).
dcreefer May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I used purple up for a while and it did give me results, the iodine in it was also really good for my inverts. The only problem with it is I feel like when you start using it you cannot stop. If you stop using the purple up and try to switch to kent products it is very difficult to get the same results. Just my .02
Kimchi Corals May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 In my limited experience with reefing I have realized that good things happen slowly and bad things happen quickly. You may be better off just letting nature take its course instead of using an additive that may just be a placebo or worse yet cause harm to your reef and fish. Just my 2 cents. John yauger

bamainva May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I have used it to get my calcium raised, seems to have promoted some coralline growth as well. I got the calcium to an acceptable range and haven't added it to the 12g since then. I haven't noticed an increases in any other testing parameters. to the kernel...it isn't the roids...it is the love i give my corals...
The Kerrnel May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 to the kernel...it isn't the roids...it is the love i give my corals... I hope you don't get stung by that anemone....
toastiireefs May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 i have some! im dosing something else right now that has calcium and iodine, so im not dosing the purple up anymore my issue with it is that i have a bad algae problem (i have concluded that its because my tank is near a window.) but purple up has high phosphate so that is like encourageing the algae and i dont want algae so again im not using it (ya want it? maybe a little trade ) haha I used purple up for a while and it did give me results, the iodine in it was also really good for my inverts. The only problem with it is I feel like when you start using it you cannot stop. If you stop using the purple up and try to switch to kent products it is very difficult to get the same results. Just my .02 why? cuz thats what i did... but not for coraline.. i switched to kent becase i needed to raise my Mg... and it says not to dose with Kalk... and even thogh purple up isnt Kalk... isnt it still practically the same thing

Thanks Josh I have a 75g that is an experiment with Purple up, the tank is doing so good i haven't stopped in a year. anything I put in it takes off. none of the test are off. in 6 months it had the wholoe back glass covered with coraline, althought the tank was about 3-4 months when I finally started using it. I think it works myself. I also have a tank starting on C balance that is doing really good too my next tank that i juststarted is going to be on Bionic 2 part. in a a year i will take a pic and see what each tank looks like and see which one looks the best from start too finish.
