Wow there sure was alot of fine sediment in that bag of crushed coral I got from Petco.....

yikes...I guess that frag will be with me longer then we planned O.o

:D

I just put filter socks on the 3 drains of my tank and cranked up the skimmer, killed the closed loop. I imagine it will take a hour or so to clear up 90% and the last 10% will likely take a few days to clear. I just thought it looked kind of spooky :gho:

It does look like something from the planet Xenon... or maybe a cheap sci-fi movie.

or just the imp that rules dans tank..

LOL, I looked at the cowfish, the noticed the coraline growing along the sand line and top edge of the tank. Nice to see someone else doesn't scrape all the time.

That's really just gunsmoke from "tex" the long horn, shooting em up right?

BTW, How fast (and how high) did your pH go up and come back down?

Did it settle just above or just below the previous level?

Just looked at the controller logs and there was no abnormal ph bumps or dips. It took about 3 hours for the water to totally clear but I imagine there will be some fine sediment that will need to settle out over the next few days. I'll probably have to clean all my pumps next weekend as a result of that sediment.

Interesting observation: Today I have better PE on my SPS then I have had in several months. Could this be somehow related?

Maybe related to having a short period of low light? I'm beginning to think that turning the lights off or reducing the light cycle for a day or two may turn out to be a major secret to successful reefkeeping.

You mean like cloudy days.... which was the title of the original post.

That fish is hella cool. I gotta get one someday. Thats the kind that wont kill everything else in the tank if it dies right? What kind is it again?

Yep, exactly. I think we will hear a few horror stories where three days of no light "killed all of my SPS", with the poster forgetting to mention the temperature or Alk spike that also happened around the same time, but most of the reports have been positive so far. Think about it. We are trying to create a mini-reef with high intensity lighting that never has a cloudy day or a rainy week. Maybe coral needs a dark period sometimes.

And just so this post is not entirely OT... Wow Dan. That tank sure was cloudy! :wig:

Longhorn cowfish. It could kill eveything. I run a ton of carbon to minimize such an event. I also have an extremely peaceful stocking list to go with him. Planned upgrade to 370 gallon.

I take it that fish will stay in the 54 by himself to afford you more variety in the big tank?

No. He will be the focal species in the big tank. The entire stocking plan is geared around him. The 54 will be the refugium/seagrass tank for the big one and likely feature S. tapetums and pipefish. Creating a stocking plan for a large tank that doesn't include any of the typical large aggressive reef fish has been challenging but then again you get the opportunity to realistically look at fish like the Moorish Idol so it's not all bad ;)
