rrubberbandman February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 Ok here is my question... why do you run carbon? and how do you do that? Why: to aid in the removal of impurities(since some of us dont have the mercedes of skimmers) How: deposit in a high flow area of sump/filter/etc. Hope this helps in clarifying!

Ingo February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 I use Black Diamond from MarineLand. Charcoal pulls out coloring agents and keeps the water from turning yellow or green. I use 8 ounces for a 125g and replace it every 2 to 3 months.
geofloors February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 I used Black Diamond for years but in a reverse reactor the stuff floats and gets clogged to easily. I have switched to Kent's reef carbon. This is a pellet type of carbon and doesn't float or get clogged like Black Diamond. George
dandy7200 February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 Black diamond 2 cups/80 gallons water changed monthly Kent Reactor I buy gallon jugs from Dr Fosters cheap.
Grav February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 I think the Kent stuff is the best, I also like Sea Gel which is Carbon with a Pos remover... this helps keep any hair or cyano down.
scott711 February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 chemi pure just added an ingredient to remove phosphates from the water. I haven't tried it yet.
extreme_tooth_decay February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 I use black diamond, 2-3 cups. 125G tank + 55 sump I replace it about once a month. tim

davjbeas February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 I use Kent reef carbon on my 75 gallon reef. I use black diamond on my fish only tank. I use a magnum 350 canister filter for the carbon which i change monthly. The reef carbon claims not to leach phosphates. The black diamond I don't think makes that claim. David B.
madmax7774 February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 Anyone have any experience with Purigen? by SEACHEM? it is supposed to be the Cat's meow of filter media...
rrubberbandman February 14, 2007 February 14, 2007 Anyone have any experience with Purigen? by SEACHEM? it is supposed to be the Cat's meow of filter media... Purigen will remove nitrogenous compounds which if left can turn into nitrates....but it will not remove the actual nitrate compound itself.
