  1. Fantastic build and several clever designs!! When is the tank tour? -Carl
  2. Does anyone have a "low-light" Fish only system? For several reasons (less algae growth, lower electrical cost, no chiller, lower cost of equipment), I am curious what is the LEAST amount of light you have on a Fish only tank...but still get a MH shimmer...and can still see the fish...on a tank with a height of 24-36 inches -Carl
  3. Have an Eheim for 5+ years. Fairly accurate, and always reliable.
  4. My pair of false percs left me alone for almost 2 years...then all of a sudden, when they started laying eggs, the female would attack my hands. She swims right at the top of the water if she sees me attempting to put my hand in the tank, just waiting to bit my fingers. So I started using the rubber gloves up to my elbow now.
  5. Those fish are GREAT!! What is the first and third ones?
  6. So, the sock is the return to the sump...and to the right is the "over" to eliminate more bubbles if they still exist. And the right hand side I presume is for the skimmer? or refugium? Where is the return to tank pump going? And what is the compartment behind the sock, with the two black bulkheads ????? Is that for a heater? or probe?
  7. Yep...didn't realize that...one per order, not one per person in a group buy. and you also have to make a $79 purchase I believe. nevermind...
  8. I've heard of - not seen - someone take the air intake from the skimmer recirulating pump - and put it in the 5 gallon skimmer collection bucket. So if the skimmer skims out 5 gallons of skimmate, the air intake will then be under water, and not produce bubbles, and skim any longer, until the 5 gallon bucket is emptied. I do recall that Dan said this was a bad idea...but don't remember why. -Carl
  9. I got this email from saltwaterfish.com And I could use one of these guys. Anyone want to do a group order? -Carl Well, the 24 hour special yesterday sold out last night...so we thought we'd put out one more so nobody feels like they were left out. Drum roll..... until 10 AM Thursday morning, or while supplies last, you can purchase a Koran Angelfish for $4.99. As always, this is for new orders only. There are no rainchecks or retroactive pricing. We usually sell Koran's for up to $39.99, so this is an incredible deal...and it is on top of the great weekly deals already up on the site. For the next 24 hours, you can buy a Koran Angel for $4.99, only at Saltwaterfish.com. Thank you for shopping at Saltwaterfish.com!
  10. Let me know if you can get these...I would like to get two of them! Even if you marked them up 50%, you'd have to have some big truck to carry enough to make a million!! -Carl
  11. I didn't realize most of these have a very short life span, and are that difficult to keep. I suppose thats why we don't see them very often...except for Roozen's of course. I'll have to think of something else creative and fun. -Carl
  12. I'm curious if anyone has tried and successfully kept a Nautilus, Cuttlefish or Octopus? I was at the National Zoo today, and watched the Octopus feeding...and was wondering what it would take to have one myself. -Carl
  13. http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~Sea...ns~vendor~.html How about the IceCap fan? Is it quiet? overpriced?
  14. The entire back of my canopy is open. My only experience with fan cooling...is an attic whole house fan. And to keep your house cool, the idea is to vent OUT, with the windows open. But as I sit here and ponder my fish tank, I don't think the bulbs would be as cool with both fans venting OUT, as they would be with air flowing directly on them, pushing air INTO the canopy. And if the life of the fan didn't matter to me...what would cool the canopy better...one in/one out, or two in? And Bob...does turbulent flow cool better? (two in) or does constant flow in one direction cool better? (one in/one out)
  15. Don't mean to hijack the thread...but I have a similar question... I have a canopy over a 75 gallon with 4 96w PC's. The canopy is already drilled one on both sides for a 3 inch fan. I don't want to put an opening in the top...as I usually put stuff on top of the canopy, and don't want to see light leakage coming onto the wall and ceiling. So, what do you suggest in my situation? One in and one out? or both in? -Carl
  16. In case you need it, Reefcentral has a Drain/Overflow Size calculator...that recommends plumbing diameter for drains/overflows based on gph. It is towards the bottom of the home page on the left side. http://www.reefcentral.com/ -Carl
  17. If you chose to break it up, I am interested in one of the Eheims, and the Sea Swirl. -Carl
  18. Is it too late to glue the broken piece back on that broke off...and then take the entire housing from the old pump...and put it on the new pump?
  19. Brian, I posted on a thread a couple of months back asking about this...and yes there are many who have drilled their tanks...but none at the time confessed to 4 or more holes in a 75. Have you filled it with water yet? Have you hit the glass by mistake, say, with a rock during aquascaping, and it survived? How about a 5 year old hitting it with their plastic baseball bat? (I'd like to say my kids are well behaved...but not always) Looking forward to the pic's. -Carl
  20. Do you have a picture of the holes you drilled? I'm curious about where you placed them? high? low? towards the sides or middle? all in the same (i assume back) glass? and how large are the holes? and have you put water in it yet? I would assume there is more pressure pushing the glass out in the very middle of the glass, vs towards the sides. I need to do the exact same thing...drill 4-6 holes in the back of a glass 75...but I've been nervous about doing it.
  21. I have a 65 gallon acryllic with occasional scratches that my kids put in. I come home many times to find out that they have taken the Magfloat into the sand, then "cleaned" the acryllic. It's a pain, but I've successfully buffed the scratches out with a kit...and have kept the corals and fish in the tank when doing it. I don't really know if I'm doing anything harm...but so far...no issues. btw...I'm switching my tank out for glass over the next month or so. -carl
  22. Thanks for all your replies. I think I'll use vinegar and/or bleach (separately)...and if some smell persists, I doubt it will have any effect long term...as long as I have good skimming and carbon. -Carl
