  1. My tank is in-wall. Dunno where you're located, but if you're near Vienna you're welcome to swing by and take a look. Or check out the website in the sig. I'm out of the country for the next 2.5 weeks though.
  2. I have a Yellow and Unicorn. I had a Sohal but he passed away recently due to my lack of due diligence. I added them all at different times the Unicorn came first. Then came the Sohal. Then came the Yellow as a rescue. The Yellow got repeatedly beaten up but the water quality was good and feeding was regular so he was able to heal up well and eventually got along. Then I lost the Sohal (1st sohal, not the more recent loss) due to HLLE caused by an extended power outage and current leak in a spare tank. When I got another Sohal there was some ... "negotiation" about territory but they worked it out in short order.
  3. Okay, I'm officially still a slacker. Woohoo. :-\ Hey but I'm going to India for 2.5 weeks. Maybe I should start a new thread for this
  4. Note that a broken ASO isn't necesarily the culprit. Your check valve may have gone bad too (or instead). I buy check valves (many at a time) from Air Water & Ice. (http://www.airwaterice.com/)
  5. Thanks Chip for the move. This tank is very much in a holding pattern right now as I'm in a Masters program so I'm not doing a lot of additions. I did manage to get my frank tag set up and am battling some major cyano problems. Yeah yeah, let the water chemistry get away from me. It's a slow road to recovery but I'll get there. Got my alk and pH back into reasonably good parameters just last week. Once I do some cleaning I'm going to try to take advantage of my wife's new D300 and 105mm Macro VR lens to get some good shots. If I'm REALLY ambitious, I'll do a tank tour. I've got a variety of coral frags I need to get rid of. (alas, no I can't make it to the frag fest this weekend)
  6. Yeah there's a boatload to catch up on. I think that's hopeless Instead I think I'm going to get my tank back into good shape again and make an effort to start attending some events... and MAYBE even do a TANK TOUR oooo.
  7. Ran into Outlaw at BRK this weekend and got READ THE RIOT ACT for having dropped off WAMAS ... okay, so maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration... Anywho; in a Masters program right now so I don't know how plugged in I can be... availability I suppose will be spotty at best, but I'll try to stay more engaged. I really should considering that my 30G frag tank is going well and I really need a find a home for a whole lot of frags. Yeah yeah, fragfest .. unfortunately I'm just under-prepared. Tank's fallen into a little bit of disrepair -- got some algae problems, just recovered my alkalinity from the pit of despair. Things appear to be stabilizing and whatnot. Man, I missed those green bouncy guys.
  8. If you're ever in the Vienna area, you're welcome to swing by and take a look at my ACIII setup.
  9. I got one of these with my RO system: http://www.aquariumwaterfilters.com/index....t&Itemid=26 They're not super cheap, there are probably better deals out there, but it was the perfect size for what I was looking for and I subsequently drilled it to add a ball valve for easy water removals. http://reef.korff.org/pictures/Tank-In-WallProject/100_4762
  10. I have a number of beginner corals in my frag tank -- plating monti, digi, leathers, frogspawn, zoas. I can't make it to the mtg but if you still need something, I'm in Vienna.
  11. Well there's physical warfare and then there's chemical warfare. As far as physical warfare goes it really does depend on the maximum length of sweeper tentacles. Just keep an eye on things and move items as necessary -- or be very vigilant and trim sweepers. Plus it very very much depends on the corals on question. I've had clams and ricordia right up against frogspawn with no problems. A gorgonia stalk though died in just a few hours. As far as *chemical* warfare goes, you need to have the corals in two different water systems. I once had chemical warfare between i-don't-know-what and something-else-in-the-tank. Not a pretty sight. I've also had mass xenia meltdowns which may also be chemical warfare related.
  12. Looks more like snail eggs than the stalk of the mushroom.
  13. It depends on the setup, eh? Any fittings outside of water I cement. I have a U (actually a 1" PVC and 90 degree elbow) jammed into the slip end of a bulkhead in my frag tank. Worst case scenario for me in this case: water level in frag tank drops to lower than it should be. Oh well!
  14. greetz. If yer ever around vienna let me know.
  15. I have both a ups and I think the same generator chip does. I also have a system out on the Internet that powers my web site and alerts me if it can't connect in to my house to pull stats off my aquacontroller or reefcam. The diy backup kept flaking out on me (went through 3 inverter models) so i gave up on it.
  16. Whatever you do, don't make any dramatic changes period. Second... question whether you really need to be changing anything if everything's healthy. Third, get a second (third?) opinion. Finally, if you feel confident your calcium is too high, *then* take gradual corrective measures.
  17. See website; there are things I like... and things I don't.
  18. Wanna talk fish/corals? I live in Vienna so I'm pretty close to you. Maybe if you're interested you could swing by some weekend or something for a fish room tour and I could loan you some books or something. Just PM me and we can work something out. Also check out my website below...
  19. Wow, that's cool. Good work on the design again there Bob.
  20. Very similar to the quote I got. I think glasscages was around $500 or something, Miracles was about $1700 or so if I recall correctly. In the end, I spent $2200. I could have saved $500 if I hadn't tried to save $1200. You do indeed get what you pay for. The glasscages tank was heavy, sloppy, and developed chips (some quite large) immediately after being filled with water. Looked fine on the truck. The miracles aquarium has been running beautifully on a professionally made in-wall stand. The guy at Miracles explained to me how chips can develop due to "shark teeth" caused by lack of machine polishing on Glasscages tanks. Indeed the edges of glass on the Miracles tank are mirror smooth. Really beautiful work. Very similar experience here. Except I didn't get my money back.

  22. I have several frags in my 30G frag tank that are doing fine right now, I could hold that for a little while. I"m actually babysitting about a dozen things for someone else (and have been for almost 8 months!) so one more won't hurt. Getting it to Vienna VA might be a trick though.
  23. also, please add your location to your profile. It helps us figure out if your nearby and may be interested in something we have.
  24. Mostly I'm trying to share my experiences without trying too hard to sway you one way or another. After all, what works in one case may not for a variety of environmental factors not originally thought to be relevant, or simply not available. In my case, there were two anemones that had bleached that I brought back into good health. I did this through a combination of good lighting and frequent feeding. Where by frequent I mean daily at first and then tapering off into every other day, every few days, and weekly untill fully back to health. As far as feeding goes, I've never tried to put food directly into the mouth so I can't sa if that's a good idea or not. With my bleached anemones, I used a smaller dropper (what came with my refractometer actually) to spot feed at the outer tentacles so that I could observe closely what was getting eaten. Where's traveller7? He's the resident anemone expert, I think. FWIW, YMMV
  25. I don't typically feed my anemones unless I'm trying to rescue them. That said, when I have fed anemones for fun, I simply allow food to pass by their tentacles or blow some food onto the outer rim. If they're hungry, the food will "stick" and the anemone will close up or the tentacles will fold in towards the oral cavity.
