  1. Well just tried that test with some low quality polarized sun glasses and I think the tank front and back are polarized. It is hard for me to tell because the light source is a camera LCD panel since my laptop doesnt darken with my sunglasses. I hope this tank is not tempered but I guess I will have to wait until Tuesday and call Aqueon now.....
  2. I dont think it is tempered but would like some confirmation since the manufacturer site is not helpful and their customer support is only Mon-Fri..... The bottom has painted tempered glass logo and also has a sticker that says do not drill glass enclosure.... Are those warning just for the bottom panels or does that include the side panels? I just bought it 2 months ago at Petco.
  3. Leesburg store has a sign up saying $1 per gallon up to 29g. However, my wife bought me a 75 before Christmas when they were having a $1/gallon sale and anything over 29g was half price. So it was about $90 for a 75g (not reef ready).
  4. So my 12 year old son (who is setting up his first FOWLR) is the one who tested my pH yesterday. It appears now that he might have only used 4 drops of reagent instead of 5. Retested the pH this morning and we measured between 8.0 and 8.2 in the morning so I think we are good!
  5. My test kit is just a regular old API saltwater test kit but most bottles have expiration dates and the high range pH does not... I bet it is very old. I will get another kit tomorrow and try again. Should I add KH buffer or calcium at this point to try and bring up the pH? Thanks!
  6. I have an issue in my tank and I need to reverse it soon.... I read my pH today at 7.4 and I have a very unhappy anemone. I have Brightwell aquatics alkalin8.3 (KH buffer)and I have Seachem reef complete (looks like mostly calcium). Should I be adding the Alkalin 8.3 now and then follow that up with the reef complete an hour or so later? I recently began mixing my own water and I am using a very old bucket of Instant Ocean. I just bought a new bucket of IO Reef Crystals and was wondering if I should start using that to get a better mix for my reef? Please let me know if you know how I should raise my pH safely in my tank. It is only a 36 gallon tank. Thanks for any quick help.......
  7. We just got a new puppy an we bought an indoor cam at Costco for 75 bucks. The video quality is not great and probably not good enough to see how corals are doing though I haven't tried that yet. Hard to beat the price and convenience of checking on the pup from anywhere using a call phone.
  8. It is a normal 20g tank
  9. Any recommendations on an inexpensive but sturdy stand for my sons new 20 gal FOWLR tank?
  10. Pretty sure I screwed that one up.... bought my salt at petsmart and saw the saltwater fish at petco in leesburg.... was at both stores multiple times yesterday with a brand new puppy, a hamster, 2 lizards, 2 cats, a reef tank and another soon to be fowlr tank...we tend to frequent those stores! Haha Merry Christmas
  11. Leesburg also had sea salt and reef crystals half off....though I had to ask for the reef crystals which were in the back. Also bought a 20 starter kit to set up a fowlr for my son. Kit included tank, hood, some type of light, heater, hob filter, and maybe a thermometer. Normally 99 on sale for half price of 48. Sale runs through today. Petsmart in leesburg also hired a reefer to keep their salt water fish tanks up and they have looked much better lately. I haven't bought any livestock there but they had some good looking fish and even half a dozen flags of Xenia and some other corals. The tank system looked better than most lfs.
  12. I have had two clowns in my tanks for 15 months. Everything has been great until I got a RTBA about 2 months ago. The larger clown hosted to the RBTA almost immediately and now she is very aggressive towards me! The other fish are not being harassed but I am guaranteed to be bitten at least 50 times each week when I clean my tank! I just gave up on trying to do anything about and I am just glad the clown took to the RBTA since it had been in the tank so long without an anemone
  13. I would love that tank and stand! I will take it if it is still available. I just sent you a PM. Thanks Dave
  14. I put a ball valve beTween the output of the pump and then input to the reactor. The problem is that when I start to close the ball valve to slow the flow into the reactor my pump gets very loud. Too loud to be in the room with it. When I open it up to not be loud the media gets way too much flow. I removed the phosban media which seems soft and replaced it with pura gfo that seem bigger and claims to not turn to mush if tumbled harder. I will turn that on to,or row and see.
  15. Where do I buy the Flucanazole at? Right now I am scrubbing my rocks once a week with a toothbrush which knocks probably 70% of the GHA off the rocks and then I use a small diameter tube to slowly siphon off water and I chase the clumps of GHA around the tank until I suck them all up the best that I can. My skimmer turns green in about an hour and I have to clean it. I did a water change 3 days ago and I have a good mat of GHA again already. I am wondering if the water I am bringing in is full of Phosphates.
  16. My pump is too strong so I want to add a bunch of media to my new reactor to slow the flow through the reactor a bit. Is there such a thing as too much media? Seems to me once you get to zero phosphates it should just stay there? I should mention that I have a ball valve in line with the intake but the pump gets very loud when I closet the valve. I am using a Cobalt Maxijet 600 on a phosban 150 reactor.
  17. Hmmm.. Great idea..I haven't thought of this but is there a way to have Macro without a sump?
  18. I buy my water at LFS so I am hopeful that the TDS is zero...I am anxious to see if the reactor does a better job because of all the things I am trying I am hoping that changing the light schedule to 7 hours and running the reactor will get me the most benefit. It is frustrating because I just dont feel like I am dumping that many nutrients into the system.
  19. The time has come to mount a major offensive against the GHA problem I have been fighting for 4 months. My tank: 36 Gallon bow front- No Sump Ehoppes 75 skimmer 2 hydor power heads for circulation 1 HOB 50 with GFO in a bag and carbon in a bag Marine Orbit LED light established in July 2016 I feed about 10 pellets OR a small pinch of flakes each night and I intentionally skip a night about twice a week. Livestock- 2 clowns 1 obnoxious 4 stripe damsel 1 purple dart CUC- Turbos, conch, hermits, other snails Corals 4 head of hammers- Used to be very open everyday and now closed up (see pic) Duncan Monticap growing like crazy except for a dulling of the maroon and green colors (hybrid monti) Birdsnest growing like crazy favia growing well Trumpets that have looked like crap for 2 months Zoas that have all been closed up and mad at me Great open brain coral that has not been happy for about 2 weeks brand new RBTA- been in the tank for less than a week Lost a nice Pink Linkia star fish last week after having him for about 4 months Today test numbers- Temp- 77.4 (always steady) pH- 8.0 dKH- 7.0 Salinity - 1.025 (two weeks ago had a bad swing up to 1.030 when I did a water change and didnt dilute the RODI salt water with fresh RODI... Didnt figure it out for about 4 days and then made a quick water change and quickly brought the tank back down to 1.025. Phosphate- Reads 0 but must be higher given all the GHA Nitrate- 0-5ppm Calcium- 440PPM Up to now, I have scrubbed with a toothbrush each week along with 5 gallon water change every week. I have had relentless GHA since about June. If I win this battle then I will be a happy reefer and continue on and maybe build a 90 gallon tank, and if I lose I think I will be shutting down this tank and taking a break. The offensive will consist of: 1) running my lights for 7 hours a day instead of 10 2)removing my HOB filter that I was using GFO in a bag and Carbon in a bag 3) installed a two fishes Phosban reactor with Phosban only- Installed it today but the Cobalt Maxijet 600 has too much flow and is too loud when I turn the ball valve down- will run it at night only until I get a smaller pump 4)soaked my trumpets and one rock with blue zoas in 3% Hydrogen Peroxide mixed 1:8 with tank water for 6 minutes 5)scrubbed my rocks with a toothbrush for about a half hour today ( I have scrubbed each week with a 5 gallon water change every week) 6) I vacuumed the sandbed to get rid of the little GHA on the bed itself. Most GHA is on my rocks Here are the pictures before my maintenance today: Please let me know if there is anything else you can think of that I should be doing to get this problem under control. I poke fun at it but I am really at my wits end. If this is not resolved in 45 days then I am thinking I will breakdown my tank and either start over or take a break from the hobby.
  20. I introduced a RBTA to my tank two days ago. It attached itself to the rock overhang and now it comes up and around the rock right next to my Duncan's. I am sure the RBTA tentacles reach the Duncan's and I am wondering if the RBTA will sting the Duncan's or is it ok where it is for now? I am hoping the RBTA will wonder away but so far he seems content. Will the RBTA sting my Duncan's? Thanks for any input you have.
  21. Good news, its too late for the 5 gallons I dumped but it it does save me $25 bucks to buy a new jug! Thanks for the quick replies.
  22. I went to change my water tonight and I noticed the bottom of the 5 gallon jug that I store SW in has a scaly deposit int he bottom of it. I shook it up hard and some of the flakes came off and were suspended in the water. I dumped that water down the drain and put hot FW in and shook it like crazy and the rest is not coming off. Any ideas what it was and if it is normal? I hate to throw the jug away since it cost me $25 and I have only been using it for a year. Thanks! Dave
