Interestingly, the Shadow overflow that I have has a gasket that goes inside the tank and another that goes outside tank on each pipe. I am definitely over thinking this as I am flying solo with only the help of this forum and youtube! I am setting up my first large tank with a sump in my family room and I am over thinking it for sure..... I am nervous about this! Thanks for the advice....

Should I paint my tank then drill for the overflow or do you drill first? Also, does it matter if there is paint under the gaskets for the overflow?
-
Yeah that is a good idea. The overflow can go with me in that way. The real cost difference in fittings is for the gate valves. Huge difference between a 1 inch gate valve and a 1.5 inch.... Unions are only about 5 bucks more for 1.5 inch.

I finally got my 75g tank today and will be drilling and plumbing this week. I have Synergy Reef ghost overflow and I would like to glue a 1.5 inch to 1 inch reducer bushing right into the overflow. I realize this will restrict how much water can flow through the drain lines but from what I can find, a 1 inch pipe can move 960GPH and my return pump (Sicce 3.5) is only rated at 660 GPH. I want to start my plumbing by reducing the size of the pipe because all of the fittings, unions, and valves are way cheaper in the 1 inch size than in 1.5 inch sizes. Am I missing anything here or am I ok to reduce the pipe size right out of the overflow before the first union?

Getting back into the hobby
finaddict replied to blaze98's topic in Welcome to WAMAS: FAQ / FYI / Hobby News
good group of folks here -
I force fed it a small piece of Lrs and it took it and extended bigger than it has in awhile. About an hour later it ejected the food and its foot released its hold on the container. I added some fresh tank water and the nem never got its foot to take hold again. The pink color that was left was gone last night. I will check it again this morning but I think it lost the battle. A bit frustrating because my tank has been doing well except for this and I have a small Duncan colony that has been mad and closed up for awhile.

I bought a RBTA about 6 months ago and it did well for awhile and was about 3 inches across when fully open. Then it began not opening as much and now it stays shut almost 24/7. It decided to move about 2 weeks ago and then it started wandering again today so I caught it.It is now in a small tupperware container and it is about the size of a pea but it still has some color (see pic). I was thinking of adding a lot of finely chopped food to the water since it is a controlled environment now to see if the food will help... Any other ideas of how to save this guy?

I have an Aqueon 75 gallon and it is defective. I never filled it so Petco will exchange it or give me store credit which puts me back in the market for a new 75 gallon (48 inch wide) I need a tank that I can drill the back panel for a Shadow overflow and I have been told Deep Blue is a good option. What else should I be looking at? I am open to rimless or with a rim and would like to be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. Any suggestions?

FYI, I bought the shadow that Roni was selling back in January.

I will be installing a shadow overflow on a new 75 as soon as the 63 mm drill bit arrives(should be here this coming week). You are welcome to borrow the drill bit so you won't have to buy one if you go with the shadow.

I decided against any bleach or acid washes on this go around... I have heard of people adding ammonia or fish pellets or something like the Instant Ocean BIO-spira... I am just not clear on how these additives impact the rock cycle and whether or not I should use them or just soak my rock.

So I will be starting my pukani dry rock curing tomorrow. It is picked clean but I was wondering if I should add anything to the water for the first week or so help get rid of the organic matter I couldn't get? I figure anything to help breakdown the organic for about a week then water change then add some live rock from ,y current tank to start the good bacteria. Any suggestion other than acid to help get rid of organics?

First Aquascape- With Pics- Need Feedback
finaddict replied to finaddict's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the feedback... great points to consider. FYI, I taped off the tank dimensions minus two inches on each side for cleaning. I can scape right up to the blue tape and be fine. The tank is 20 inches tall and the vertical tape on the back is at 19.5 inches. I think I am probably at least 4-5 inches below that for the peak on the left. I plan on keeping a ton of corals hopefully! I have corals now that will transfer over (some that like light like birdsnest and Montipora) and also plan on increasing my fish count to a good amount. I have a large Vertex 180i skimmer for 100 gallon total water. The tank is a typical 75g. -
I am happy with some aspects of this and not happy with others... Please chip in your feedback on what works and what doesnt in this scape.... Front View Right View Left View

Does anyone know a LFS in Nova or MD that sells the E400 cement? Thanks

Ok I will one up you.. I have the same exact issue about to happen.. going from a 36G bowfront to a 75G with a sump.... So I need to add new rock (curing Dry Pukani now) to some existing live rock from my 36G. The problem I have is the 36G is sitting right in the same spot where the new 75 is going to sit. How do you do that when you have to shut down one tank to move it before you can set up the second tank.....?

Recommendation for bonding dry rocks together.
finaddict replied to Tommy's topic in General Discussion
Any chance you have a link to the rods you used? I am about to put an aqua scape together for 50 lbs of pukani coming tomorrow! -
Thanks for the ideas.... I meant to put this in general discussion but I must have been in for sale forum last... mods please move to general discussion

SO I woke up this morning to see that my HOB filter had enough crap caught in it to cause some water to drip over the back and onto the floor. Probably had 2-3 gallons end up on the floor last night! Question is how to you get that saltwater out of the carpet? It is located behind my aquarium which I obviously cannot move. Any ideas?

Anybody know the difference between the Sicce Syncra Silent and the Syncra Pro? I am debating buying the Syncra Silent 3.5 and the Syncra Pro (800 gph) for my return pump on a 75G DT with a Skimz UP34 sump. I want to add a 16 inch Shadow internal overflow (Bean-Animal). Any suggestions on the correct return pump?

So after some internet searching it seems that Petco has sold so many of the Aqueon tanks during the $1/gallon sales that Aqueon put together as many tanks as they could as fast as they could to meet demand. That means some of their tanks are tempered only on the bottom while others have tempered glass for all the panels. It is a roll of the dice literally. It also seems that depending on the Petco, they will allow you to bring back your tempered tank and exchange it for a non-polarized tank. I will be trying this exchange at Petco in Leesburg since mine is a tempered tank. Fingers crossed!
