  1. Nice work Tony! Love the red. I've also adopted Bruce's method and have seen a significant speed up in coral growth.
  2. treesprite, hopefully you'll never see an issue but I saw enough in my follow up visit (which I did in order to inform them of what happened) to think their livestock was not worth the risk. Hopefully things have changed but now that my tank is well and my fish are healthy, I won't risk being burned there again. In 20 years with 6 different tanks that was my worst experience.
  3. I agree w/the CP treatment if you can get your hands on some. I will never buy a Petco fish again. I got a tang which wiped my entire tank out. I went fallow for 9 weeks and finally got rid of whatever it was and now QT everything before going in the main tank.
  4. looks like you're playing with fire I personally wouldnt risk it on a DT but I have to admit, it would be cool if you fixed it!
  5. I've had my apex for 2 years and didnt realize it now has the heartbeat feature. I know it's been discussed in the forum (slightly) but given how important it is I thought I would reiterate. After all, if it saves 1 tank, it was worth the time I read that it pings every 10 minutes to see if your apex is up. I have yet to test this, however. For those of you who havent updated in awhile, this could be a great reason to do so. Here's a vid on it's setup:
  6. If you got a true carpet, I bet the clowns would jump in w/in a day. When I got my clown it hosted the powerheads for months. Then I got a very small green Gigantea. The clown jumped in almost immediately. While on vaca, the carpet vanished. I presume it died over the week and was absorbed by the water gods. A few days later, the clown jumped into one of the 3 BTAs that I had. Your tank looks great. One day I hope to get my corals growing as nicely.
  7. Big improvement over a year ago! Is the carpet Nem still around?
  8. If you're moving some stuff over then I see no reason to omit other items.
  9. by the way, does anyone have or know where I could get a couple of the screws for the Kessil Gooseneck mount? The big ones. For some reason, I need all 3 for each mount on this tank and am missing 2 screws!
  10. So I went to centerville aq. and got another 90g. It's up and running with some help of my neighbors. I'm still putting in rock and the basic pump/heater combo so I can just have it going. Unfortunately, one of the drilled holes is for a 3/4" pipe not 1". Both of my holes in the other tank were 1". That set me back a couple hours as I tried to figure out a way to get a small peg in a large hole It's iffy but it's working! A trip to home depot will be in order at lunch time (if work allows) tomorrow and some quick and dirty pvc work to get this semi permanent till I can think this all through and do the whole plumbing and rock work correctly. So far, I dont see any casualties except my poor wife and the BS this has put her through. I'm sure some corals and frags aren't gonna make it once the cloud clears but we'll see. Sorry I couldnt respond quicker, but I was in panic mode and had to get water out of this tank asap. Here's a pic of the crack: https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0fGY8gBYGyN6yW The lamp actually came down 1' away from me. I was under the tank working on it - I consider myself REALLY lucky so far.
  11. I had a lamp fall over and hit the corner of my 90g reef tank!! It put a small crack in it. I'm about to replace the tank but need a couple of hands to help swap them out. Please text me if you can help. If anyone is near reston I would greatly appreciate it! It might save my life - the wife is about to kill me for this. Dan 646-509-8306
  12. We need the solar to tesla battery pack to happen without costing an arm and a leg so I can have AC and heating too.
  13. Thanks dpassar12. My kessils are about 12" above the water. I have a pH probe in the reactor and tank. They were replaced and calibrated recently so should be accurate. The reactor is kept at approx 6.8. It seems to range b/w 6.6 and 6.8. Once in awhile, my alk gets high so I turn off the reactor and within a day the alk is back to 9 - I've been trying to calibrate the reactor to stop the pH drift. Currently, it takes about a week or 2 to drift up one dkh so I'm pretty close. I have a carbondoser regulator that is controlled by the apex so as long as i test alk frequently, things don't drift too far. I need to take an image of the corals during the daytime. They look very different. I just got some extension tubes for my camera so I should be some detailed closeups soon. As for PAR, I borrowed the WAMAS par meter a while back. It was getting very low readings low in the tank 75ish?? But was in the 300s at the top if I remember correctly. The readings were bouncing all over due to the water movement. From what I read, most reefers w/SPSs keep the kessils b/w 10-12" high and at 80-90% intensity. Frustrating. There's a lot of money in this tank!
  14. I use an apex so everything is controlled. Temp is 78, RODI (Spectrapure maxcap 2), lights are Kessil 360we's. I have 2 kessils and it's a 90g tank. Intensity was at 81 but now moving it up towards 90 by a degree a day. pH is 8.0. My calc reactor keeps it around that all the time. There is a tiny move down at night but it's small.
  15. I saw a thread where someone suggested throwing in some TSP. Sounds insane!
  16. I believe I've had water in it since jan 2015.
  17. So even though most corals seem fine, and fish are great, I have noticed a small increase in algae starting. I am about to swap out the carbon and mix in a bit of GFO (after measuring params, of course). However, notice this one frag that refuses to look like the red polyp table that I think it is. It's brown during the day and this color at night. This image is a long exposure taken with the lights out - so the image is a bit brighter than it really is in person. Why does this turn BROWN during the day? Initially, I thought it was going to die but it's been doing this for months. This frag has been in the tank since Sept and hasnt done much.

  19. In case there was still doubt: I moved the contents of a 75 gallon lps system from Richmond, VA to Jersey City, NJ about 11 years ago. I setup a 90g tank there and drove the fish, coral, rock, 1/2 the water, and my poor dog that night. I didn't lose a thing till I accidently crushed a shrimp as I was loading the livestock into the new tank. It was a highly successful, but stressful and tiring trip that I would not wish upon my worst, nosy, pain in the #$$, neighbor Considering the distance you are moving, I would absolutely start over. It's usually more fair to the animals as well.
  20. Happy Mother's Day fellas Just wanted to post an update. I did a couple of things that seem to be helping. I usually run 1/2 GAC and 1/2 carbon in my reactor. For now, I replaced all the GAC w/carbon. If I start seeing GHA, I'll put some of the GAC back. I also cut down the water changes by about 1/2. The corals seem to be looking and growing a little better. I dont expect to be GAC free long but for the first time, I was able to measure nitrates and phosphates (WHOO HOO!!) - never thought I would be happy to see those Nitrates are almost impossible to read on the Salifert test but in crappy light, I "interpreted" the test to read b/w 1 and 2.5ppm? My low range Hanna checker read 4 which at parts per billion is low but at least measureable! I also decided to order a white tail bristle tooth tang but that won't arrive till tues and I'm gonna QT it for at least 2 weeks. So at this point, I would say that evidence suggests that my issue seemed to be low nutrients stunting the growth of my SPS's.
  21. My old nitrate kit was the crappy API one so I ordered the Salifert. They are either undetectable or the lowest reading on the salifert test kit. If my 3yr old gives me more than 5 minutes to myself, I'll try to vacuum out the sump today. It's been a while. My fish load is definately light. My tank is not a new tank. It's been up and running for almost a year and 1/2 now. Here's a video of the contents. Note the alg on the sand and on the coraline. The tang died on friday so only the clown and firefish fight on. They seem perfectly healthy.
  22. Plenty of room but I like the air adjustment.
  23. My understanding was that the ideal temp for chaeto is 5-6k but the more you look, the more conflicting stories you read. Everyone who succeeds in growing seems to find a different reason. CF to LED, LED to CF, bulb temp increase, bulb temp decrease. It's difficult to know other than to keep trying something till it works. Having said that, I've tried chinese grow bulbs, Home Depot LED, CF and they all seem to have similar results. The best so far is the CF I have now. When I first bought the Chaeto, it grew but then came to stop.
