  1. Hey Everyone, Hanna is recalling many of the Reagents for the alkalinity tester. I stumbled across this recall today and am so glad I did. Hopefully this keeps others from incorrectly dosing their tanks!!!!! In order to see if your Hanna Alkalinity Reagent is useless, go to this site and put in the Lot # of your solution (written on the package and bottle) https://hannainst.wufoo.com/forms/w1hzjs2j1b4ejyu/
  2. honestly I cant be certain. It didnt show Ich symptoms but it was the first fish after a 72 day fallow period. It LOOKED like ich the first time. The last fish was a blonde naso which never was a great eater. I never saw it take any food and I tried a variety, including nori. It seemed ok for the first week then the 2nd week seemed to get more shy. It stopped eating and was unable to swim after a couple days towards the end. It lived w/o swimming for about 3 days. Maybe longer b/c I'm not very observant at times. The reason I want to use CP is for quarantine. Seems to be the most effective way to go along w/Prazipro.
  3. great info! I just lost a $70 fish after 1 fallow period and and 2 weeks. I would gladly pay the $50 for a few doses. So far, I've called several vets. Waiting for a callback on 3 and 2 said they wouldnt do it b/c I'm not a patient. Seems to be quite difficult to obtain! I do have some Ich Shield on hand so maybe that will have to do.
  4. I was hoping to get the pure CP from a known pharmacy. How many grams? I dont know, I want it for my QT tank. I have NLS but according to Humblefish on reef2reef: NLS Ick Shield contains CP sourced from China. There is both a powder form (for QT use only) and "medicated" pellets (for DT use). The latter is useless for parasite eradication but may be useful for disease management purposes. As useful as garlic or any of those herbal remedies anyway. The former would be unreliable IMO because CP sourced from China is not always consistent. Maybe it's 90% pure, 95% pure or 99% pure. IME; CP is only reliable for external parasite eradication when it is 99% pure. The best way to ensure you are getting 99% pure is to only buy from an American or Canadian pharmacy which adheres to strict govt. regulations when it comes to medications meant for human consumption. CP is used to treat malaria - many tourists begin taking Chloroquine prophylactically before visiting Africa. That guy who shot the lion probably has a stash.
  5. I dont trust ebay b/c there have been reports of some ineffective batches being sold - so the purity is not certain. According to some forum experts, you can get a vet to write a prescription but the pharmacy may be hit or miss on weather you get the pills which may contain other filler chemicals, or the pure powder. I would like to obtain the pure powder, obviously. I've now had a tang die after going fallow for 72 days so I want to treat in a QT before going in the display. I have a new bottle of Prazipro ready to go as of today but want the CP as well. Tired of losing fish
  6. apparently I love to revive old but useful threads such as this. If I may add, I'm basing my QT on this thread and would like to know if anyone knows how to get some reliable Chloroquine phosphate: http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-to-quarantine.189815/
  7. That's shocking! In 20 years, I've never heard of such a thing. Glad you're better though. You should post a pic of that guy - it's now infamous!
  8. I just purchased a 3-pack from from these guys. They arrived in a matter of 2-3 days. I can attest to the speed of delivery. I'm eagerly awaiting the results. http://www.saltwateraquarium.com/triton-labs-icp-oes-water-test-full-panel-of-32-elements-saltwater-reef-testing-kit.html
  9. Great work! What are you using for a return pump?
  10. you have any kids? Looks like Play Doh
  11. I built my own from a 40B but in hindsight, I would have gotten a Trigger Systems Emerald. http://www.marinedepot.com/Trigger_Systems_Emerald_Sump_Complete_Aquarium_Sump_Units-Trigger_Systems_LLC-6E81644-FIFRBSCU-vi.html
  12. monkiboy, thanks for the help! I'll certainly contact you soon. As for what wiped them out, there seems to be some debate but we'll likely never know. Some clues: Within 2 to 3 weeks 2 tangs, 4 clowns, and a dottyback were wiped out by this disease (in that order). I've detailed it on that previous link on R2R. The consensus was either Ich or Velvet with the rate of death being so high, I'm leaning towards v. It seemed to come in when I got the 2nd Tang. All fish looked and ate quite well before that. I have a pretty high res pic of the sick onyx in the other thread. In any case, fallow is likely the best route so that is what I will do. I've done this long enough to know that each shortcut in this hobby will take 2x longer and 3x more money in the long run, especially when it gives you the "do I really have to go to school today?" feeling. I would be glad to QT these guys if I thought I could do it effectively but at this point my confidence in providing a STABLE environment in a QT is low. The 2 clowns died in my 10g QT in one day, likely due to the added stress of the move and an unexpected temp swing (was too cold in there the next morning). They were my fav fish in the tank too. So if anyone wants these guys, let me know. The sooner, the better - so I can start on the 72 day period.
  13. My concern is not the size of the QT but being able to keep the fish alive in one. My display tank is a 90g w/a 40g refugium having lots of chaeto. Millions of pods swim around all over the tank now so the dragonette ha no issues finding food. Now that the other fish are gone, I dont even feed the 2 fish. It seems that it would be a lot easier to just get rid of the 2 existing guys and run fallow for 72 days and start all over (fish-wise). But I'm open to suggestions from the community! I would treat the tank with CP if I could but I have 4 nice anemone's and other corals that would prob get wacked.
  14. I do not but the prob is mostly the red scooter. He only eats pods. I dont know if it will eat anything else and I risk killing him. If I medicate him in the tub, the pods will die on contact. Note the thread here - where it's explained to me in great detail: http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/ichish-looking-clowns-can-anyone-id-this-illness-pic.200662/page-2#post-2308578 I'm bummed b/c I really love those 2 fish and they are the only ones to make it unscathed from the ick or velvet or whatever it was. I guess the larger container could make a much better QT tank if I were to get it though. Do they sell them at the tractor supply store?
  15. Hey Everyone, I had a bad case of either ich or velvet or fish bird flu and need to run fallow for the 72 day period. Problem is, I need to house my lawnmower blenny and a VERY cool red dragonette (the one with yellow fins). Since my qt tank is only 10 gallons, I dont think I will be able to keep them alive for the 72 day period. Can anyone suggest a new home for these guys while I try to set things straight? Everyone else succumbed to the disease. Dan
  16. I'm not a fan of the anti siphon holes. I tried it and it just splashed too much. A slight adjustment in the return nozzle (raising it closer to the water surface in the display tank) and all was fixed without having to worry if the hole gets clogged or splashes or makes noise. One thing I would recommend: When I use my feed method on my apex, it turns off my return pump. That causes the backflow as you would expect. However, the high water in the sump causes the skimmer to overflow - which will dump the nasty stuff that has accumulated back into the sump. Plus it's bubbling all over the place. To fix it, I turn off the skimmer pump and ATO as well during the feed cycle and about 5 min after it turns back on so that the sump can level back off b/f turning everything back on.
  17. Good point Scott! Mine will email and text me when ever any critical parameters are out of range. Although I don't know how to email when the power isn't on since the router tends to go out as well.
  18. 72 days should do it. Here's my thread when asking about meds, etc: http://www.reef2reef.com/threads/ichish-looking-clowns-can-anyone-id-this-illness-pic.200662/ Does anyone have any suggestions where I can hold my dragonette and lawnmower blenny during those times?
  19. Mark I had a similar issue years ago but was able to save the anem. I was able to pull it off the rock and place it in a 5 gallon bucket containing newly made salt water, a heater, and SMALL airstone. I did a 50% daily water chg in the bucket if I saw any stress from the anem. It was oozing for a couple days before recovering. Overall, it was in the bucket for about a couple weeks before I cleared out the bad water in my tank. Initially, I had also saved the mating pair of clowns but one jumped out of the bucket. That made me sicker, knowing that I had come so close to saving the most important part of the tank only to screw it up so absent mindedly. IF you go this route, dont forget the to cover the containers or the fish will jump ship. I now have a small QT tank just in case but it's not large enough to hold all of my 90g tank's creatures. I also have two 30 gallon Brute trash cans in the garage - one full of fresh the other full of salt water. I recommend doing something similar so you can clear out the screwed up water. When I lived in an apt, I had a fairly large trash can in the bathroom with the RODI unit plumbed into the sink next to it. I would imagine the skimmer could go nuts for a while - till things settle. I just recently had a parasite come in and wipe out all but 2 of my fish - which I need to remove in order to let the tank run fallow for 72 days. So I know your pain. Keep at it.
  20. I didnt. Not in 20 yrs of reefing. TILL TODAY! Now I totally agree w/the post above! After buying a nice tang from Petco, I now have ich and I've lost 2 clowns and 2 tangs . All fish looked and acted great till about a week after bringing one of the clowns home. I have 2 more clowns left and 1 of them looks like tonight could be his last. I just ordered some Chloroquine powder from amazon and overnighted it. If anyone knows where I can get some locally, please let me know and I will get it asap. It seems like a pain to QT but I'm now a firm believer. It would have been cheaper, easier, and a LOT less PITA to QT from the beginning.
