I stopped using redsea because of the brown film. I use reef crystals now and that doesn't happen any more.

Just ordered an mr5 reactor to complement my Avast K1 and ATO. I also ordered some 1/8" i.d. tubing to lengthen my ato setup. I tried some airline tubing but it just felt like it was going to slip off at any moment.

This is really making me want a 210 downstairs!

So should I start with maybe one cup of carbon and then up it one cup per week?

Absolutely. Keep the water level in the sump such that it can handle the overflow from the tank if necessary. A ups can't help you if the pump burns out. It also makes it easier to work on stuff knowing you can turn off the pump for maintenance issues. Similarly, I balance the water level in the tank/return chamber so that if my overflow fails the tank can hold the extra water.

You didn't have any back pressure issues with the mj1200? I noticed on brs they recommended not using them for reactors because of back pressure.

I got a feeding stick/turkey baster at petland. It is your standard baster with a 2" spike that slides out of the end.

The light is 15" off a 24" deep tank. I keep the halides on for 5 hours a day. I did some target feeding last night. Sure was a pita trying to lay a shrimp on each mouth! In the end, I think I was able to feed about 3/4s of them- the ones in the back were harder to target.

I do have one of those. I'll try a targeted feeding first, and if they don't grab it quick enough I'll try the bottle trick.
