  1. When & where is best time to come out and pick up the DC8? Thanks, Ray
  2. This is a video under the old lights... The old lights were great, but they were nearly $100 a bulb (x 4) and they needed to be changed at least twice a year (really every 3 to 4 months). The new bubls are the $13 ones and they seem to be doing pretty good by the livestock. I have mixed the 14K and the 20K but, I will be going to all 20K soon.
  3. A couple of pics... Recently added a Unicorn Tang...Thanks Renee!!! And a Video! [url=http://s698.photobucket.com/albums/vv343/dcreefer/?action=view
  4. Hey Dan, I used a piece of vinyl tubing and pvc glue to couple the shut off valve to the skimmer housing. Wasn't a hard fix but between school, family and work...I just could not get a momment to really go for it. I fixed it about a week ago. If the tubing fix starts to fail, I am going to drill the actual case/housing of the skimmer and add a bulkhead. (I may actually do that anyway over the summer.) I'll take pics Thanks for your ideas! What are you using for a skimmer now?
  5. Well it has been a long while since I have updated my thread so
  6. Pm sent on the DC 8 if it is still available! Thanks, Ray
  7. Welcome Amari Sounds like you have started with a pretty good set up there. The ich is a terrible foe, but he can be defeated with a quarantine tank and strong UV setup. My advice (when possible...) I personally try to buy equipment not for where I am currently but where I would ultimately want to go. (I have a 300 gallon tank but one day, ONE DAY, I may want a 500 gallon tank...so if I need to buy a skimmer, I'll purchase the for the bigger tank.) With this attitude, I have more than what I need for today and exactly what I need for the future! Welcome again & Happy reefing, Ray
  8. Congrats man, That's a nice looking clam...
  9. But I put my hand in the sump to pull out cheto for the Tangs! That thing looks like it could take a finger or maybe a whole hand! 6 minutes to vote! Should he live or should he face the tidy bowl?!?!
  10. Didn't think of throwing him in the Sump! That may be a good answer... The poll is showing about an even race for keeping him or flushing him. I'll give it another couple of hours and see what the polls say! Polls closing at 9pm est! Get your vote in now!!! Live or Die his fate resides in your hands.... Choose his fate....
  11. Too funny! I would kick him outta my tank too!!!
  12. Lion fish I'll eat, big nasty worms is a no go in my book! So far the Poll is indicating that more people say to leave this beast in the tank! (only by 1 vote) Reading through the article that Tom posted, I think it looks more like Hermodice carunculata! So far I am leaning towards sticking it into the freezer, then flushing this beast into the Potomac! I just don't think anything that big should be living in my tank unless I intentionally put you there!
  13. Wow This seems like a great deal!!! The link below has them for sale for $45 http://www.hollywooddj.com/pcb9.html Thanks for posting!!!
  14. I pulled this out of my aquarium... http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv343/dcreefer/95d13e86.mp4 Should he stay or should he go? What say you?
  15. What's the ratio of Dead Sand to Live Sand? Are you adding live rock? Are you using any fish to help with the nitrogen cycle? I used 40lbs of live sand to "seed" about 300lbs of dead sand earlier this year. I also added some live rock, damsels and a couple of clowns to help with the process. My sand went through a large algae bloom after about 30 days. I added some snails, shortened my light schedule and bye bye bloom.
  16. Wow that is huge! I will be following along...please share photos as you take them!
  17. Wow Paul, That story was told so eloquently. I've never explored a tidal pool...but now I have too! Thank you for sharing.
  18. Check out Pacific East Aquaculture in the vendor's section. I was there last weekend and they had a really large supply on sale no less.
  19. SO I picked up some live rock from Dr. Mac and after being in my tank for a couple of days I noticed some little brownish (maybe yellowish orange) little things popping out of the rock. None of the fish are bothering them and and they seem to be on a couple of rocks...cant tell if they are spreading. Please tell me what they are:
  20. Yeah Bristle worms are pretty darn amazing. I left some "Live Rock" in a 25gallon rubbermaid trashcan for almost 8 months...no heater, sunlight, skimmer or pump and can you believe when I finally broke down and decided to just dump the remaining water and leave the rock in the sun to bleach...Bristle worms were among the creatures that were running around the trashcan and rocks! I was completely in awe that anything could live in that old funky super salty water with nothing filtering or providing oxygen!
  21. Your right it has been a long time without any updates! Here are some... I have now transitioned from a semi/quasi/mixed reef to an actual reef. (My big distinction is that a reef tank has more than just mushrooms & no fish that are "reef safe w/ caution"!) The large rabbit fish I had decided that he really did like the the taste of leather corals and decided to swallow a "Volley Ball" sized one. This is a photo of the coral the rabbitfish ate. I got it from Jarosh Needless to say I had to get rid of the rabbit fish and the beloved puffer. I never saw the puffer eat any corals however he was eating/terrorizing every other invertebrate that was in the tank. Don't try that tactic with me buddy, You're outta here! After the power outage that left parts of the Nation's Capital without power for a week (I lost power for 27 hours); I lost my large anemone, a 3 spot damsel, a blue damsel and a maroon clown... (moment of silence) Boo Power's Out (Yes BWard that would be the Naso Tang laying on the bottom of the tank) He did survive...(He swims super fast so it's hard to get a good shot) Shot of the tank currently Thanks Forrest for the great corals, They are doing quite well. I have been on a live rock hunt recently trying to get great quality rock without having to answer to Upper Level Management (aka my lovely & supportive wife). I just don't think she would really understand going into a store to pay anywhere from 6 to 10 bucks per pound for the "Good" stuff. I scooped up a bit from extreme_tooth_decay (thanks Tim) and I checked out Dr Macs. Dr Mac was not there but his staff was really good. I bought some big pieces of LR (priced really well) and once I got them home and dropped them in the tank I discovered little growths (dare I say polyps) coming out into the light! Check it out and help me identify please... What are these? In the past, I think that I was a little fearful of going to a "complete" reef tank...The cost of mature/large corals and the time it takes a frag the size of a quarter to "grow" out. Now I have time and I am working on my patience... Thanks BWard for the really nice corals
  22. Wow this is great info, keep it going! We need to make a permanent note called "Worst Case Senerio" and list everything that one should have if the power goes out...glass cracks...mantis shrimp attacks ...massive flood...etc
