  1. Monday November 23, 2009 I should have pictures today or tomorrow. I ordered some powerheads and some 20k bulbs. Hopefully I will have them in soon. My powerhead configuration will be 2xMJ1200 w/ mod on each side and a koralia 3 somewhere, possibly the middle. That will give me 1600gph x 4 + 850. That will give me about 7250 gph of flow, which is about 33x. For lighting, I plan to do the following. 4x39W Actinics on 8 hours per day 2x175W 20000k on 5-6 hours per day (far left and far right bulbs) 2x175W 14000k on 3-4 hours per day (middle two bulbs) Correction: I didn't realize the MJ mod came with a 2100gph impeller as well as the 1600 gph one. It looks as though I will be doing 2100x4+850. My new flow is 9250 gph, or ~43x Later that day This shot is with the actinics and 2x175W. It becomes too white for my taste after adding in the other two 175W MH bulbs. I will be getting 20k bulbs on Wednesday at which I will be running 2x175W 14k and 2x175W 20k w/ 4x39W actinic.
  2. Sunday November 22, 2009 Yesterday I went to hang the canopy and discovered that my joists and beams are not in the right place. The wires would be 7 inches from the left end and 15 from the right. I made a quick (still took me awhile) set of legs to hold the light above the tank. Today I am going to make a canopy to put over the tank. In other news, I have the water 3/4 full and I am not happy with the 14k bulbs. Part of the problem is the lack of a canopy spreads the light all over the room, thus diluting the effect of the fish tank. The other bit seems to be that it is just too yellow. I am ok with it if I run only 2x175, because then the actinics are of much more effect. I am thinking I will exchange the bulbs for 20k. I will exchange at least 2 of the bulbs. Then I would run the bulbs with the 20k on the outside and the 14ks in the middle so it would go 20k, 14k, 14k, 20k. Anyone have an opinion on this?
  3. Wednesday November 18, 2009 Here is a shot of the tank. This is prior to me cleaning it out. The tank will go up on the stand tonight. I will get some more pictures and upload them later. The lighting hood thingy is sitting on top of the tank in the picture. I am going to suspend that 6-8" above the tank once everything is in place. Later that day So, I put the tank up today. Here are some pictures. (the cat is massive....do not misinterpret the scale) I put my new bulbs in. I don't get the actinics until tomorrow. Here are some pictures of the 4x175W 14k MH bulbs. The canopy will be raised 6-8 inches off the tank.

  5. Hello All, I am setting up a 215g tank (72x24x29). I got the tank 2 weeks ago and have been setting it up since then. I plan to use this thread to show picture updates of the tank, as well as post information regarding its progress. For the first few posts, I will be doing a catch up until we are at the current position.
  6. Google Durso Standpipe or Hofer Gurgle Buster to stop the sound. I put a Durso on my 120g and it worked perfectly. On my tanks with the eshopps overflow I use the Hofer Gurgle Buster and it works great.
  7. I had a yellow tang remove about 1-3 inches of hair algae covering the entirety of a 72g tank in about a week.
  8. WAMAS is great. I moved from Houston to DC and back to Houston. While in DC, WAMAS was awesome. Get involved, you won't regret it.
  9. Weird. I never turn mine off.
  10. I already have a 1 MJ 1200 w mod that I was using on my 120g. It works great. Make sure the impeller sits in the little hole in the encasing.
  11. I didn't realize the MJ1200 mod came with 2 propellers. It looks like I will have ~8400 gph instead of the ~6400 gph I though I would.
  12. I decided to do 4xMJ1200 w/ mod. There is no way I can afford vortechs. My wife would shoot me. I miss the fish tank stuff. WAMAS is much more active the MARSH out in Houston. I also can't believe that I got a 215g. I sold my 120g and got out all the money I put into it. I bought a 215g that was a pretty good deal. It isnt RR, but I decided I would rather do the eshopps overflow than lose the space in the tank. My tangs love the new space.
  13. I have already filled it partially with water. The bottom glass is tempered. I have a smaller version of the overflow on my 65g and have been happy with it. The eshopps ones work very well. I had a RR 120g, but I didn't like how much space in the display I lost.
  14. I have a 215g that I need powerheads for. I currently have a Koralia 3 and a MJ1200 w/ the mod to make it 1600gph from my 120g. I am not looking to spend too much money. Is 20x still the standard? If so, that is 4300gph. I have 1600 (MJ1200)+850(K3)+500(return pump) = 2950. Would just getting another MJ1200 w/ mod work...but leave out the Koralia 3. This would give me about 3700 gph of flow.
  15. Looking awesome. My house looks the same with the blue lights coming out of all the rooms I have fish tanks in.
  16. Looks good so far. Excited to see where it goes.
  17. Awesome tank. Makes me jealous that my 120g doesn't look like that. You did a great job.
  18. Good to be back. I keep in touch with Fishcam and I have been telling him for some time I need to take a new picture of my tank to put on WAMAS. Maybe once the lights come on for the 65g I will get some pictures of that.
  19. Yes....it is an oceanic. As for the CPP, I am pretty sure he just died one day...and then the fish cleaned him up quick. All I found were a few of his bones. I also lost one of my maroon clowns months ago. I was pretty sad about that.
  20. I finally took another picture of the tank. I got married in March, so I had to take a break from my fish tanks in order to mess with that. Anyways, things are settling down and my budget has opened up a little bit more for aquarium money. I haven't added any corals on this tank. I added some to my 65g though. In this tank I now have the following stocking: Maroon Clown Yellow Tang Vlamingi Tang Picasso Trigger Porcupine Puffer Green Bird Wrasse Brown Bird Wrasse Scribbled Rabbitfish The tank has been stable for a while now, with few changes.
  21. 50 million times better
  22. I have the same tank and was thinking of using the Nova Extreme SLR T-5 http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod...fm?pcatid=16770 This is my lower budget tank though. The light costs about $185. I don't have the light, but I have had the Nova Extreme 4x54W on my 72g and I currently have the Nova Extreme Pro 6x54W on my 120g. I was very happy with both.
  23. Texas doesn't quite count as DC Metro does it?
