  1. I have a beautiful Turbinaria, with green/purple colouration, it was one of my earliest purchases, when i should have known better, but have had it for just under a year. That aside, i have noticed there is some severe recession around it's base, the rest of the coral higher up is fine and polyps are fully extended all day, as they always have. It's well out of the way of attacking corals, and the polyps shrivel and drop off as the recession reaches them. I have a scrolling turbinaria, that is growing nicely, bright yellow, with no problems at all. The base is the widest part of the coral, as it is quite a weird shape, and gets light all over. All my params are fine, i'm running carbon, 10% weekly water changes, i can't see or explain why it's happening Am at work at the moment, so can't take a pic, will post one later today or tomorrow. Does anyone know why this may be happening? Thanks Anton gvl]]
  2. Thanks Guy's I've got my Ca Reactor arriving this week, so after i spend a few days playing, and tweaking and then unneccesarily playing, i'll do my weekly 10%, and pick off the algae in the waste water. I'll cover the patchs after i've picked them off, so as to limit the regrowth of this pest Thanks again Anton rk]]
  3. I have noticed that i have an increasing Bubble Algae problem, so going for the natural remedy i bought some Emerald Mythrax Crabs, 8 to be exact, the problem is they haven't touched it. they just scurry round eating everything else, do i have defective emerald crabs?, does my bubble algae taste like s**t compared to other tanks? They've been in there several weeks Any help would be appreciated my next guess would to cut back on photoperiod (even more), feeding and i was also thinking of covering the accessible patchs with something to starve them of light. Any other natural Remedies? Thanks in advance Anton rk]]
  4. Take a sample of you water to a couple of LFS and have it tested, or ask someone else with a saltwater test kit to test your sample. change your filters. maybe your O2 levels are low ?? (i'm reaching with that one) HTH Anton rk]]
  5. It looks like the remains of where some seaweed was attached to the rock, i had rather a lot when i bought the 225lbs of Fiji and Tonga LR i have in my tank. If it is you might be lucky and it may grow back, like some of mine did, until my Mexican Turbos found it and ate the lot. I could be wrong though (and usually am according to my better half) HTH Anton rk]]
  6. I had a green and brown coloured mushroom in my tank that reached 7 inches across until it split into 3 two weeks ago. Now there are 3 mushrooms growing very rapidly, total diameter for all 3 at the moment is about 8.5 inches, i'll have to start fragging them soon Anton [nana] rk]]
  7. I purchased Tomato clowns for my tank a while back now, i already had a false perc in there, the tomatos were unrelenting in their pestering of all the fish in my tank, even my Flame Hawk and Australian Dottyback, which are bigger, more aggresive fish. Had to remove the tomato clowns and just gave them away as they were to much trouble. As for the LR wall, you'd have to make sure there were no gaps small enough for a clown to squeeze through, you could try putting some egg crate down the center of the tank and pile the LR either side. HTH Anton rk]]
  8. I like Neon Gobies, but like the Cleaner shrimp my Flamehawk eats them, and i'm loath to get a cleaner wrasse as they nip at clam mantles. Any other suggestions besides removing the flame hawk. Anton rk]] [pcwin
  9. I have recently lost my 5" long skunk cleaner to my growing in audacity Flamehawk, i knew there was a risk but even my flamehawk used to go and get cleaned by him, which as you all know is very cool to watch. now, i have another cleaner in my refugium, but i'm not gonna sign his death warrant by putting him in my main tank. so i was wondering what a good replacement cleaner would be, have looked at the cleaner wrasse but a bud of mine has one that nips at his clam mantles, anyone else seen or heard of this? so my question is REPLACEMENT Cleaner ????? any help and all recommendations are appreciated, as my fish are looking a little frayed around the edges Anton [tom]

  12. Back on the never ending subject of Ca Reactors, i found this site, which has some cheap (i know theres a catch somewhere), equip on it, the regulators look good, but will the Reactor itself be ok, my system size is about 220, as i have zero experience with these things, i was hoping you guys could cough up your $0.02 for a reactor noob. heres the link, http://www.vividaquariums.com/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=04-1213 lol4]] Plus their site looks quite good, anyone ordered from them b4 ? Anton
  13. Just as an aside, is there anything you can do with old MH bulbs, i mean is there anyone that can use them, it seems a bit of a waste to throw out bulbs that work perfectly well, but have just lost there intensity, if anybody wants my 400w 12k's for a frag tank let me know :D Anton
  14. Hey Everyone Called into Fins & Feathers. Small, just starting up. Only open two weeks so not much stock yet but owners very keen to become the Marine & Freshwater hobbyists choice. They were very excited to hear about their mention in the WAMAS forum, and would love for other members to visit and give any advice and help to make this a Great LFS. Think it would be a great store to work with and cultivate links with as the Ashburn area is ever expanding. Found their prices to be on the cheaper side of normal. Overall, Friendly and very helpful people who are very eager to soak up tips and any info from seasoned aquarists. As yet, little stock to tempt the high end reefer, but will keep a close eye, as they sound very promising. As for directions, if you put the address into mapquest, it gives directions to the sales office, as the area is brandnew, if you follow those directions you pass a Safeway, the store is in the same row or precinct as Safeway. i plugged the club big time, but due to the fact i accidentally laundered the cards i picked up yesterday, i couldn't leave them a card, but gave my details, and the WAMAS web address Anton
  15. Hi I've got a Lyretail Anthias in my tank, and he seems very happy by himself, although he did have a funny five minutes with my Bi-colour Blennie the other day. other than that he gets on great with everyone, Hippo Tang, HawkFish, Clowns,Angels and Dragonets nice active fish, beautiful to watch only hides in the rock work at night, otherwise he's out ALL DAY. I have read somewhere it keeps them happier if they have a harem around them(what guy wouldn't), don't think it has to be the same type of Anthias, but it's supposed to keep them mellower HTH Anton
  16. Excellent Thanks guys I'll start dosing tonite, and report the destruction over the next couple of days, only joking, but seriously thanx for the info fellas see you all for the first time on Saturday Anton gr
  17. I Know this subject has lots of threads elsewhere, and has been thrashed to death, almost, but it's been a long day,and can't think straight so would like some help please. I have mixed up some Kalk for the first time, taking the instructions from Breefcase on reefs.org, i multiplied the quantities, from 15ml to a quart of vinegar to 60ml for a gal, and 1/2 tsp of Kalk to 2 tsp's to a gal, have done this five times, to fill a 5 Gal container, it has an IV attachment. I just get the feeling i'm forgetting something, anyone got any advice on drops per min? if i dose it next to my skimmer intake will it have any effect on either the skimmer or the Ca/Alk levels? Thanks Anton
  18. On the subject of BTA's, my Pacific Rose just won't eat, it looks fine 99% of the time, it has a dodgy looking 5 mins some days, have tried silversides, krill, fresh fish, all the above soaked in selcon still won't take anything, i give up. Anyone got any suggestions? ??? it has stayed put, just where i put it, about 5 inchs off the bottom of the tank between 2 rocks, very gentle current, under soon to be changed 12000k MH's it bubbles up, and the colours are fantastic, but it does worry me. All advise welcome Thanks Anton ::

  21. OK, now to really p*ss you guys off I've seen the light on Ca Reactors, and am gonna get one of those soonish?? What exactly do i need to get for a 180 tank, and i need a break down coz i always forget something or don't read the small print and find everything has to be put on hold until i get the bit they've just sold out of. i know i need to get a regulator, do i need the cylinder as well?, how do i go about setting it up?. I know these are dumbass questions but, when i started work in the engineering industry i was told "if in doubt, ASK" so i am Have only been here a short time but you guy's have been a great help to me already, Thanks Anton Ps, i was also told "measure twice cut once", just wish i could remember it when i need it,LOL o-
  22. I Have started to accumulate a few SPS frags in my tank now, so i suppose the higher K will be better suited to them ? Going to need more powerheads too Thanks for the info guys [hih] Anton
  23. It's time to replace my MH bulbs, so in the true spirit of some one looking for a good deal i have spent all day looking for a bargain. I have 2 x 400watt 12000k sunburst bulbs over my tank at the moment, they are quite blue, so i have no need for actinics, i think. but out of curiosity i was wondering if i should replace them with 14 or even 20000k bulbs, gradually of course. What would be the pro's/con's be of such a move with regards to sps growth or overall tank health? what do you all use, think of your MH setups? which manufacturers are the best? Here are some of the sites i found with MH bulbs http://www.coralreefecosystems.com/ltg_bulbs.asp http://www.jlaquatics.com/cgi-bin....tart=14 http://www.happyreefing.com/MH400bulbs.html http://www.marinedepot.com/aquariu....sp?ast= http://www.hellolights.com/400watt.html Thanks Anton [crzy]
  24. Sorry to be a pain, this one any good: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....58&rd=1 ??? Anton
