  1. Vinegar is eight times weaker than vodka.
  2. I am assuming the coral is wild, ensure it gets plenty of flow and acclimate to light properly.
  3. Keep the dosage the same but feed more. Try oyster feast.
  4. Carbon dosing = food for bacteria Granular Activated Carbon = Granular Activated Carbon
  5. Cell phone pics need a lot of post processing to reflect real world conditions. LEDs are difficult to manage. One day I will make a color filter.
  6. Thanks for asking. The system is still on auto pilot; no nuisance algae, pests, or equipment failures. I do bi-weekly (10%) water changes and try to feed the tank everyday. The LEDs continue to work without fail. I plan to add a few more SPS to the collection and maybe a couple more fish.
  7. Scott, You may have addressed this already in another thread, but did you try a dehumidifier?
  8. Prazi and Metro combination. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=10850833&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo
  9. You can make your own food. http://www.melevsreef.com/food.html http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-01/diy/index.php http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/coralcare/a/aa022803.htm
  10. The "danger zone" is when nuisance algae begins to flourish. That number will be different for each hobbyist.
  11. Disclaimer: The following comments below are from a non-authoritative source; therefore what you are about to read may not be of this space and time. Although I do not know what is in Biofuel, it is a carbon source like vodka, vinegar, sugar, Zeovit, Red Sea Reef Foundation, Reef Energy, Fauna Marin, Probiotic, to name as few. Understand the biology and how it works, in the wrong hands, it can cause a complete crash.
  12. Disclaimer: The following comments below are from a non-authoritative source; therefore what you are about to read may not be of this space and time. 1. What carbon source are you using? 2. How long have you been dosing the carbon source? 3. A common practice is to increase the carbon source until nitrates reach zero, and then cut the amount in half (maintenance levels). Nitrate levels can drop to zero in two weeks, so take your time when increasing the carbon levels. This will help combat STN events. 4. Recommend getting the water parameters to NSW range prior to beginning the carbon dosing regimen because SPS will/can react negatively to change, as you know. Alkalinity 6.5 dkh - 8 dkh. 5. Stick with the test kits you are most familiar and trust and only cross-reference a test when you see an anomaly.
  13. At least this did not happen to you
  14. From a non-authoritative source to another, I shall not reveal my other non-authoritative sources. Forums are rooted in misinformation and wild goose chases. Newbies in any hobby have a hard way to go. I don't trust my local butcher.
  15. Can you help my golf swing?
  16. What is the pH after you leave a window open for 24 hours?
  17. I read a paper that indicated that protein skimmers remove approximately 20-30% of bacteria from the water column. I thought skimmers were a little more efficient in removing bacteria. My school of thought is to have a strong skimmer to effectively remove the excess bacteria/nutrient collecting troops, which is why we carbon dose. Although the numbers did not look promising, I will continue to advocate strong skimming when carbon dosing. I will forward the link if I can find it.
  18. It is not required, but if you want something to play with, give it a shot. Implement the Zeo system.
  19. Roozen has one in stock.
  20. I wish there was more to report. The tank is on auto pilot. LEDs have been running at 100% (Radium-esque) for about 3-4 weeks. In respect to coral color, the LEDs are meeting my expectations, colors are vibrant and deep. Corals are growing at the rate of 1/4" per month, equivalent to a 400w Radium. For perspective, I was getting about 1/2" growth per month under the 400w 10k. No plans for any new fish, but I heard Roozen has a GoldFlake available. I .. must .. resist! I have about 40 SPS corals in the system with another 20 to go. Battle Corals, Atlantis, Reef Raft, and Unique Corals have a few I want. To be clear, I am not expecting the LEDs to outperform a 400w 10k. At this point, I am getting growth and color equivalent to a 400w Radium.
  21. I do not subscribe to that theory.
  22. << Public Service Announcement >> Please consider purchasing a carbon monoxide detector. Negative air pressure and furnace do not mix.
