  1. Just added a Royal Gramma to our tank and POOF...can't find him. He was hashing out some differences that he had with a couple of the other tank inhabitants (he liked a particular cave in the rock work and wanted to call it home...the current residents didn't agree). Any way, added him just before the lights went out and I really can't see where he's hiding (and no, he didn't jump out or anything). Now I know they tend to hide when the lights are on when they're in a new tank, until they get used to the cycle. For those of you who own or owned them, how long does it take for them to get acclimated enough to come out and show off those colors? Just curious. Thanks in advance! --Mike
  2. That's why you go for the hard sciences!!! Rock on Bio (like me), Chem, and Physics majors! It's people like us who make freshmen in college say "It's not worth that trouble" and become acting majors
  3. Where I went, they only paid if you were getting a PhD (not the whole school but the division I was in was like that). But I didn't spen 60K on mine (thank God). I was able to walk away with only ~16K.
  4. You got to love fish with personalities.... --Mike
  5. I would have been doing back-flips if my Master's cost me 30 bones to get.... --Mike
  6. The discarding of the liquid that was frozen is to help keep phosphates down. I don't feed frozen, but that's what some of the other members had told me.
  7. I took a look at the pic of the QT tank you had up. Was there anything in there that had come from your display tank? Meaning was the sponge from your HOB filter placed in your display tank for a little while (couple of days) to help colonize it with benificial bacteria? It seems you've found the problem and looked into a solution for the QT tank (adding a bit of LR). Hope your clowns pull through... --Mike
  8. You guys just want to brush up on your SCUBA diving in his tank....
  9. Welcome, According to your post, you're a board member, but not a paid member of WAMAS. You'll have to become a paid member of WAMAS in order to see and use the WTB/FOR SALE section (along with the trading forum and the auction forum). Honestly, it's the best $25 you'll spend in the hobby mainly because you'll save several times that amount by buying items from our members. I hope this answers your question! Cheers! --Mike
  10. A nuby, also rendered as newbie or n00bie, is a term that denotes a novice. The most common area of usage is online game, where phrases such as "pwning n00bs" is used quite often (the term translates into "beating up on the new guy". --Mike
  11. Are your fish freaked out (trying to swim through the bottom)?
  12. Grey Seas Aquatics is modeled off of Deltecs, and is produced by a fellow WAMASer (Dan, dandy7200). I hear the price is better (we're going to a 90 gallon and I need to start saving my pennies regardless) and I hear you can't beat the customer service from Dan. There's a Q and A thread in the General Discussion forum and I'm sure if you PM him, he'll be happy to answer any questions... I definately agree with Steve about making sure you don't skimp on a skimmer. --Mike
  13. I remove the screw every week and use the pipe cleaner brush thingy that came with the unit to clean the pipe leading into the skimmer and the part to the pump. I then put the screw back in (the top is as flush to the pipe/tube as possible). The cleaning procedure should keep it free of algae or any salt creep that might form. It's also advised that the whole thing get a proper cleaning (incl. the pump) every 6 months or so. Also, be aware that putting your hands in the water and feedings usually will reduce the number of bubbles being produced for a short time. I skim wet, so my collection cup doesn't have the same unholy color as some other skimmers do on larger systems (mine is running on a 35 gallon hex), but the "aweful tea" that ends up in the collection cup of my skimmer is no bunch of roses either....
  14. We've got an Aqua C remora on our tank. Is the thing brand new? If so, it will need to break in (manufacturing oils in/on the pump that will go away in time, or could be spead up by soaking the pump in vinegar solution prior to using it). Also, if it's not new, anything new you may have added to the tank. I added another pump to increase flow and stupidly didn't soak the new one in a vinegar solution and had to wait 2 weeks before the bubbles started climbing up the tube into the collection cup.
  15. Did your tank crack again or was there another point of failure? I hope you were there when it happened to try to minimize as much damage as possible... --Mike
  16. You have to be a member in order to use the WTB/For Sale forum. I don't think that there'll be a problem if you post here if you don't intend on joining the club.
  17. You guys should petition to have a thread dedicated to you guys. It could be something like: "Corner tanks, for those who want the best of both walls..."
  18. I suggest making friends with someone who works for CompUSA or Best Buy. They can get fans and power supplies real cheap because the "cost" price is nothing compared to what they sell them for (I should know, I worked at CompUSA back in my days in retail).
  19. If it isn't zoa's it's nails that are out to get you.... Looking forward to seeing your build... --Mike
  20. Is this a 92 to go along with the corner tank you already have? Are you trying to get back to a 210 total volume all sneaky... --Mike
  21. A bristle worm moving around perhaps?
  22. I agree with the other posts. When I was buying a peppermint shrimp for my tank, Live Aquaria had said that it's best to supplement with iodine to help with the molting. After asking the staff at Scales, they said that as long as you do regular water changes, you'll be fine (i.e., that's why salt costs what it costs, it's loaded with trace elements). Save your money and stick with your water changes. --Mike
  23. The main thing is that you can say that your tank at least sets the mood for love... Cheers to the new grandpa (assuming you still have eggs by the morning)!
  24. I believe you just use the Joe's Juice applicator syringe to put the stuff on their mouths. They eat it and the rest is history. People also say you can use a mixture of Kalk and boiling water. That you need to inject directly into them.
  25. I think this is a good reason to go the the BRK social coming up. Isn't that lighting guy going to be there (excuse my ignorance for not remembering his name or not taking the time to look up the social forum)?
