  1. Here is a video on it. They are alive. http://search.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/search/res...e=all&edition=i
  2. Pictures are always helpful. If you have any additional questions just ask. http://www.thesea.org/reef_aquarium/coral_...hus_lessons.php Zoanthus Propagation by m.g. kademani In marine reef aquariums, one of the most interesting, varied and colored species are the Zooanthids and the palythoya. These mini-anemones grow in mats onto a substrate, usually rocks, sand or other coral skeletons. They are connected by tissue between each polyp. Their growth pattern is to encrust over a substrate and then continue to grow until the edge polyps begin getting longer and longer. There are several methods of propagation of the Zooanthids. All of these methods require care and attention to detail. Toxicity Zooanthids are soft corals that contain many chemical defenses. These can seem benign, as they man not affect us, but it is best to avoid having release of these toxins into our aquarium. Thus, propagation of Zooanthids should be done outside the aquarium. Open cuts or mucous membranes should not be all allowed to touch the cutting water or the "blood" that comes from the corals. Some of these toxins have been known to cause numbness and loss of feeling (Calfo, 2001) If you do have some cuts or wounds on the hands, a pair of latex gloves would be prudent. Tools When making cuttings of corals, it is necessary to have the appropriate tools and accessories. My tool kit composes of medical instruments, glue, substrate rocks, and a cutting container. Going clockwise, the tools are small forceps, large forceps, tweezers, small scalpel, large scalpel, and probe. Underneath the tools, there are scissors, and a mini-screwdriver. For attachment to the frag rocks on the far right, I prefer to use Loctite Quicktite Super Glue Gel. This superglue applicator is easy to work with, will not clog, and lasts a long time. In fact, this is the only tube of glue that I have used over a long period of time that was completely used. If you are doing larger scale fragging, buying in larger quantities is desirable. Finally, on the bottom, a contain for holding the mother colonies and the cuttings is needed. Other miscellaneous items that are required are clean towels, cups and a good light. My favorite tools for propagation of Zooanthids and Palythoas are the scalpels and the mini-screwdrivers: Propagation There are several methods of propagation and I'll try to cover all of them that I know. 1) Overgrowing
  3. Looks nice! What's your source?
  4. I wanted to know if there are any risks of using anti-freeze as a coolant when you drill? That stuff does not seem like a good idea, but I may be wrong. BTW, I have drilled using a diamond coated bit (dremel bit). I have cut glass using the rotozip, and now I look forward to using something as easy as the diamond hole saws!
  5. Can't make it :bigcry: . I had my weekends confused and thought I would be free.
  6. I would like to join in on the fun. Let me know what you need me to pick up. I have about 1/2 - 3/4 a bottle of selcon left and some cyclopeeze. Just let me know!
  7. Larry, I was brining some sand for another member who only wanted a few cups. If you are interested you can take the remaining sand or sample from it aswell. cya there.

  10. Finally got my new pendant in, but wow what a monster plug! Do I need to get a female adapter to wire into my ballast? Any suggestion would be appreciated. Thanks, Luciano
  11. I have a 55g stand, and canopy if you want to buy it. I'll let it go for $50
  12. I come home from work and my lights are off. Everything else is working fine, except for the my MH. I try turning it back on and off. Then took it out and pushed it back in. But nothing. :wall: This normally wouldn't be a big deal, but I am leaving for travel on Sunday and won't be back till Friday (possibly earlier). So I am asking, if anyone has an old 250w DE bulb that they don't need please give me a call. I can stop by there Saturday night or Sunday morning. Thanks, Luciano 410-698-8335
  13. I really like Fischers, but I think I went past there and didn't find it. I don't remember if I asked someone or not so I'll stop in there again. Then it is over to the boat store. I actually live 7 minutes from there and they are the LHS I mentioned above. I'll try them again. Thanks for the boat store suggestion aswell.
  14. I wanted to make it out to the last meeting to ask him but I was up in Baltimore. Thanks for the tip I'll call today.
  15. As the title says. I am looking to finish my plumbing by getting some flex PVC. I have looked at Home Depot (none), Lowes (sold out) and a LHS (local hardware store :D , but no). I am gonna check a Pond store today, but haven't found any around here. Anybody know of a place in the Fairfax area? Thanks
  16. Hello everybody. Normally I don't comment on here but I felt that since wamas was representing the next MACNA convention I should make a comment. I saw the banner ad on Reef central and clicked on it to find this nice little flash intro animate itself across the screen. But there was a word thrown in there that I just did not understand. Legistation? The word is either legislation, or dictionary.com is bugged. Here check it out for yourself http://www.macnaxvii.com/ If this topic has already been discussed before then sorry and thanks for hosting
  17. for some reason I couldn't post my pics here so check out reefcentral for more pics http://reefcentral.com/gallery....thumb=1
  18. I'm making changes to my tank and was looking to place my pair of GSM in the hands of a respectful owner. $30 for the two and now for some details. The pair was recently paired on 6-21-04 and it took about a week for the female to take to the male. Pictures can be seen here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums....=416667 Just to let you know, the female is a typical maroon and wags her tail and defends her area. That being said, this is a good opportunity for someone to get a pair cheap. They are not at the stage of breeding cause it has only been 1.5months. I will answer questions and concerns over email please. AGAIN PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH REPLIES OR QUESTIONS

    Rock Making

I might be interested in going. I have about 1.5 bags of Southdown left. I would then have to go pick up the rest of the stuff. How is everyone curing their rocks? I have heard that you can just stick it in the toilet reservoir and let it stay there. The flushing will help to pass new water over it on a daily basis. How bout making to rock have some built in anchors? Like putting some small pieces of plastic hanger that could be used to anchor actual live rock to it? Just brain storming. Clown I sent you a pm
  20. Man you guys are great. Responses came real quick. Sorry Brian i was really looking for that cube look. Plus a 2foot cube would allow me to use one MH to light the whole thing. Thanks again, and if you have any other suggestions let me know. I think $450 is a bit of a stretch for me right now esepecially cause I look forward to building the stand and canopy myself.
  21. I currently have a 55 and already want to upgrade to something else. I was interested in a 60g cube, or larger. I wanted to find one that is reefready. I know glasscages.com is coming to town, but i have also heard of a few people who got tanks for cheaper then the $210 It would be to get it from them. Any suggestions?? thanks
  22. I don't think Congressional Aquarium is worth the trip from Fairfax. I would not expect to go in there and be amazed at all! They don't have much and the fish they do have is your traditional stock. I asked the guy there how they keep their fish and he said that they use hyposalinity and copper on the tanks. So they may know what they are talking about. I have found their dry goods to be a bit overpriced.
  23. Anyone interested in making a group order from West Coast Tropical Marine? I will organize a group order from them with a 5% discount and free shipping for orders over $125. If there is an interest, and I can get enough orders, I will start a list and organize pick ups and payments. I wanted to get something together in the next two weeks so if anyone is interested let me know through email please. My email is LGOMES1@UMBC.EDU. Sorry for the caps but sometimes the one at the end of the name looks like a lower case l. Here is the site address: http://www.wctropicalmarine.com/ I will am interested in buying a few turbos and an emerald or two. I live in Rockville right behind White Flint mall. I will stop taking orders on July 11th and place the order later on that week. If any one has suggestions on good ways to setup payments or pickups let me know! Luciano
