Any thoughts on "Dead" rock?

While reading reefcentral, I came across a interesting post that mentioned using dead rock as a very cheap way to get a start on a large reef tank. I've always been abit iffy about using anything to good to be true, but the deal I found from the website really has me thinking...

Anyone have any dealings with this company before? Or maybe you've heard good or bad things about them? I know it will take a few months to seed but $1 per lbs shipped sounds really good to me!

Have no idea about that company. But I have done this myself...The vast majority of my rocks I collected on the beaches in the Bahamas and Hawaii...I bought several small pieces of live rock to seed these...probably 5 years ago...and you'd never know at this point.

Much cheaper...

My tank is about 90% HIRocks. It's simply old coral rocks dug up on the island. The stuff is excellent & as you mention when setting up a large tank buying 100% live rock can get very expensive.

Two of the primary base rock dealers are HiRocks & ReeferRocks. I've used HiRocks & I've heard that ReeferRocks is lighter (HiRocks is kind of dense, though still very porus). ReeferRocks is also a bit pricier than HiRocks - ya get what you pay for.

Takes awhile to get the stuff, mine came in about 10 days (I've heard it can be longer). But that amount of weight delived from HI? I ain't complaining.

On another tack - there's always 18.2 mega tons of LR going back & forth in the member FS/Trade area ;)

Very old pic - but even at this young age...........where's the base rock?

I have 60 lbs of dead rock from Hirocks in my tank and about 100 pounds of live rock. I have no complaints. After 6 months it's getting hard to tell the difference between it an the live rock. It just takes longer for it to get covered in coralline but it's worth it if you're willing to wait.

I would reccomend getting up to 50% dead rock. I have heard that http://www.reeferrocks.com/ has better pieces than Hirocks does so you might want to check them out too.

If you want to come by soemtime and check it out send me a pm.

Ok you just sold me on the rock! I have just under a 100lbs of LR now, and only half of my tank is filled! Still might pick up a piece or two from Scales this weekend for more liverocky goodness.

I think I'll take the subtle hint and sign up for my WAMAS membership now

 Seriously, too many benefits to list - frags, equipment, rocks....oh yeah & a good bunch of folks too :)

Here's mine. It's getting hard to tell what is live and what is from hirocks I got the rocks 6 months ago.

One word of caution with using base rock. It will take longer to fully establish your biological filter and seed the base rock so remember to take it slow slow slow on adding livestock. (Taking it slow is always good advice in a reef tank anyway, but I would be even more patient with a large portion of my rock being base rock).

Well I have a 100lbs of LR now and another 40lbs of substrate in my 90 gallon that's been running for almost a month with only two small fish, no inverts and a small cleaner crew of 12 snails and 4 red legs. I'm really in no big rush to fully stock it and I wanna take the time and make sure each addition is just what we want.

As of last night my water was testing

Temp-79-81

PH-8.4

Ammonia-0

NO2-0

NO3-20ppm

Sal-1.24

Does anybody know whats up with HiRocks page? Its been down for a few days, I was really hoping to buy from them!

I have 60lbs from them also. The bigger pieces were nice and porous, but smaller "fist" size pieces were just plain solid bolders. Good for using other rocks to stack on top and good price...

Try checking to see if they sell on ebay.

I used about 100lb from www.reeferrocks.com. I used them because when you oredr they send you a picture of your order to make sure the rocks are the shapes you want. Once you get the pic you can swap out the pieces you dont want for ones that are more the shape you want. Awesome people to deal with. Also if remember they ship quickly and your rock are here in just a few days. Im getting ready to set up a 300gl tank so ill be calling them again
