sen5241b December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 someone gave me some free frags of birdsnest. Can I put a Birdsnest just upstream of green star polyp? How much is too much light on sps like birdsnest? I plan on putting them about 12 inches under 14K 150 watt MH and about 4 inches under the surface. too much?
BowieReefer84 December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 You won't be able to give it "too much" with a 150w halide. I recently did some par testing on a 150w phoenix on a hqi ballast, and was sorely disappointed with the output with the goal of SPS growth and color. I think putting it up top will be the best place.
bbyatv December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 Depends on the type of birdsnest. If it is pink, ponape, or paradise, you can burn it. If it is green, keep it lower. sen5241b December 30, 2014 Author December 30, 2014 Good info. I'll get pic. I think it's green Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Big Country December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 My ponape definately likes lower light to grow best. My green birdsnest and my purple polyp both grow like weeds when put under high light.

gmerek2 December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 (edited) It's green birdnest or pocci it will do fine where it's at Edited December 30, 2014 by gmerek2
bbyatv December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 Ya, I guess it all depends on what you consider high and low light levels. Here are pictures of my corals and the light levels they are exposed to. Green Birds Nest 230 PAR Pink and Bird of Paradise 780 and 600 PAR Bruce
BowieReefer84 December 30, 2014 December 30, 2014 Bruce, I think the thing is your idea of low light being 150-250 prob, is unlikely achievable down low under a 150w halide. Sen4251, you should try to get a par meter. I was only getting 40-100 PAR under my 150w setup at various locations in my tank at the height it was hung.
sen5241b December 31, 2014 Author December 31, 2014 (edited) Clams have doubled in size under my MH. I am hearing contradictory things about green birdsnest. What is low light? Bruce your green looks good under 230 par. Isn't there some sort of Wamas communal par meter? Edited December 31, 2014 by sen5241b
Fritz0id3937 December 31, 2014 December 31, 2014 I have my green birdsnest up high, under led evergrows and it grows like a weed.
Tinpanva December 31, 2014 December 31, 2014 Same here, tip top of the reef under LEDs. Grows so fast it's problematic at times. It's all good, great starter frags for new folks in our club or sometimes a good option for Paying it Forward and just giving them away. Our club did a growout comp with it last year, Here's how mine did over 4 months. Fresh cut, in the tank a few hours. (Nov) 1 Month - (Dec) Same month under the blues 2 Months - (Jan) Starting to get some good growth 3 Months - (Feb) Crappy picture, short month and I was in a hurry 4 Months - (Mar) It's officialy a weed now

Bruce your green looks good under 230 par. Isn't there some sort of Wamas communal par meter? There is. It's currently being fixed, but there's a waitlist going. I keep having to move myself to the back of the list as I'm waiting on my new lights, so it does move faster than i thought it would.

bbyatv December 31, 2014 December 31, 2014 Thanks. I just added this eye candy this past week. My daughter gave it to me as an xmas gift. Sigh Bruce. I want your tank....
Big Country December 31, 2014 December 31, 2014 Like Tin, my green birdsnest was up high under the Evergrow LED's when it grew like a weed, did better lower under my 250w MH's

bbyatv December 31, 2014 December 31, 2014 Like most angels, they say "with caution". I have a Regal as well. Neither one of them bother the corals. So far so good. Together they make an awesome pair of fish. Bruce Quite possibly the best daughter ever! He reef-friendly?
