My mandarin jumped at some point last night. Found him this morning with fins kind of stuck to the floor, but maybe alive and still moist, kind of. I lifted him carefully with a piece of paper and put him in the sump. His color is off and is dark, and his fins are frayed, but he is moving around and swimming a bit. There are lots of pods and small mysis in there for him to eat. What does anyone think his chances are?

slim...but if he can eat his chances are great...i would liken it to you sitting out on the beach all day getting sun poisening forgetting to eat and drink...if you can get home and get enough water in yourself...much better :)

Better than on the floor. I found my first mandarin on the carpet. I think mine was bullied out, never expected a Mandy to jump. Guess every fish is a candidate. Hope it makes it, Alan.

Mandarins definitely are big jumpers when startled or frightened. I had one that leapt out of my tank 2'+ across the room and into frag tray that was on the same height level as the top of the tank.

The question about surviving really boils down to whether there was a lot of damage to the gills. If they dried out too much and were damaged, could be too much for the fish to handle.

Ok, thanks for the, he might make it. We will have to see, I guess. Lights more of a fire under me to get some kind of screen top on my rimless tank, even though I like the topless look. I will need to drill returns into the back of the fullish tank, which stresses me out, but is doable. Hopefully the noise wont deafen all of the fish.

All it takes is one fish to jump and you'll get that screen top on.  It's not difficult, and should just take you 20min of your time.  I believe I have extra 1/4" clear netting from BRS if you need any.

you could always suspend the net cover from the ceiling. put some of those cord retractors for light duty cable on it and it'll look sharp and easily moves out of the way.

Alan, talk to Brad908 about his clear custom top for his old nano. Didn't break the back from what I remember, and looked fresh ta boot.

Isaac. I already did. Those guys aren't interested in making me one. Basically I just want a clear acrylic eurobrace that I could attach net to. Bonus if it had a groove in it to shove spline.

Seems like any acrylic tank builder could do it, but no one wants to.

Rob, I can't picture what you mean, but I will call you about it. Sounds cool.

Mandarin still alive in sump at the moment. How long would be the near term hump? Like if he lives for a day he may make it?

I think it will be hard for anybody to tell you how your mandarin will fair, although I'm sure some solace would be nice. Ride it out and do your best, hopefully you can share a success down the road.

Have you considered attempting to build your own?

Build my own frame? Yes, I've built a window screen before. The issue with the kits is that it is a bit more visible than I would like on my rimless tank. I would like one sized for the interior dimensions of the tank out of clear acrylic that I could attach with stainless clips or acrylic triangles. Maybe I will just get solid glass ones made in strips and set them on the rim and clean them from time to time.

Floor mandarin didn't live.  I feel bad about it.  Found him this morning with one side entirely white and just kind of tossing around in the sump surrounded by things he would have liked to eat in life.  Pods and mysis.  I thought he might pull through.

LOL   i had a trigger that liked to jump.  First time he jumped he landed in a 10 gallon tank with a little bit of salt water in it from cleaning the tank, happy ending.   Second and last jump was in the ato bucket.  Thats all folks.   Now you would think he was smart and aiming for the containers, two bad he could not tell the difference between salt and fresh water.

Sorry to hear Alan. Well, you tried, and now you're best bet is to go ahead and put a lid on.

Aw man, I am so sorry. You gave him a shot at life that is what matters. Now get on that screen ASAP!
