Crob5965 February 2, 2014 February 2, 2014 Hi Before I do my usual rush in and buy something without asking questions first, I have a couple of questions about the 165 W LED Lights I see for sale everywhere. 1st question is what do people think of them, are they capable of running without supplemental lighting? 2nd question, what if any is the difference between the Evergrow D120 and the other cheaper Full spectrum 120/165W LED lights that are considerably cheaper. bottom line I am looking for cheap lighting for my 90 Gal and these look like the way to go, however, I don't want to throw money away on something. Oh yeah Final question do you think that 2 is enough for a 48" long 90 gal Thanks sorry if this discussion has already happened dozens of times already, I tried to search forums but came up empty.
smallreef February 2, 2014 February 2, 2014 I have had the evergrow lights for well over a year now...and really like them... I had 2 on my 3ft long 50g....and I have 3 now on my 5ft long 150g... I'd say you'd be fine with 2... My 150g is 24 inches deep and I have lots of LPS and zoas...all my zoas are on my sand bed with no problems multiplying...
YHSublime February 2, 2014 February 2, 2014 I'm not sure what the difference in the lights are, but I think Evergrow makes the D240, which is the upgraded D120, the upgrade if my memory serves me correctly consists of an internal controller and touch screen. I run 2 of the IT2040's (Photon 32's) across my 6' 150 gallon. I am very pleased with the growth. I keep my lights about 1' off the tank, and my tank is 3' tall, so I'm growing lps comfortably on the sandbed, and sps mid-high range. I am almost a year with them now. Although I really love the natural look of MH's, the Evergrows are worth their weight in gold because of the low heat factor alone. One of our members Monkiboy has a really good handle on the lights, and arranges group buys with one of our local club sponsors, ERC.
AlanM February 3, 2014 February 3, 2014 Yes, id advise contacting exotic reef creations and buying a couple of the d2040's from them. Those are the successors to the d120s. They are the cheapest light option, and the color is very nice.
monkiboy February 3, 2014 February 3, 2014 yes, they are capable of growing any coral without additional supplementation. the greensun and other manufactured lights that look like the d120 are poorly made in my experience. all the major resellers of these lights no longer sell the greensun fixtures as of a couple years ago because of all the issues, cheaply designed and installed components that led to more failures than anyone wanted to deal with. in just opening the fixtures next to each other you can see the detail and effort that was put into making the evergrows easy to work on, well organized, and solid connections. all this being said, the d120 is no longer made by evergrow and has been replaced by the d2040. the d2040 has heatsinks, comes with the premium hanging kit, comes in the IT series preferred sleeker case, and comes in white or black and is sold at the same price as most folks were selling the d120. yes, two will do it over a 48" long tank. you can run two d2040s for the most affordable solution, or if you want/need the controller option: one it2080, or two it2060s for edge to edge lighting, or two it2040s. feel free to review the latest ERC group buy for these lights for more detailed information along with links to the RC threads about the evergrow lights. whenever you're ready to order or if you have more detailed questions, shoot ERC (exoticreefcreations) or me a PM and i'll be glad to help you out. oh, and welcome to WAMAS!
wangspeed February 3, 2014 February 3, 2014 Reef Breeders has the Photon48 available, which is what I use on my 90. 48" fixture with integrated controller. It's made by the same factory as the other lights we're talking about here but I prefer having one unit. It's a total of 102 3 watt LEDs. -- Warren

Crob5965 February 3, 2014 Author February 3, 2014 Thanks for the info guys, I guess i'll steer clear of the no name brands, seems like saving a few buck up front could potentially be a real headache soon after. I guess I need to be happy with an already super cheap fixture to begin with.
