javelin911 January 1, 2014 January 1, 2014 For a 250 gallon, 72" tank. How many holes for a coast to coast? Still 3? How big do you think? So the coast to coast would be like 50" maybe? For returns, if I do 2, one on either side of coast to coast, how big should I make the holes for those? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
DaveS January 1, 2014 January 1, 2014 I'd still do 3 (probably 1.25"-1.5") and make the 2 returns 1". My philosophy isn't to have a huge turnover through the sump. You simply want enough flow to ensure the sump related stuff works (skimmer, media reactors, heater, etc) and rely on internal devices for the water flow desired by the inhabitants. This can be done through powerheads, vortechs, closed loop, etc. High sump turnover rates just make for excess noise, salt creep and potential for flooding.

wangspeed January 21, 2014 January 21, 2014 1" should be more than enough. Keep in mine that 1" siphon can flow a tremendous rate. You are just going to have to close it off with a gate valve anyways. Even Beananimal himself uses 1" bulkheads.
20LogR March 24, 2014 March 24, 2014 FWIW I did 4 in my 36" C2C overflow. 3 drains (full siphon, partial siphon, and emergency) and 1 for return. all 1" bulkheads. A 50" plus C2C has more than enough room for an extra emergency drain. Woot! First post
