  1. I assumed Redsea was using the same screen frame material and was just providing different corner pieces. Sounds like that's not the case?
  2. I've always just used screen top corners and sides from Home Depot with the mesh that you can get from BRS. Do you have lot cut outs or are you looking for a standard 4 corner top?
  3. I have a spec V freshwater planted on my desk at work as well! I love those tanks and fits in my desk perfectly. I keep shrimp only so i dont have to worry about feeding over long weekends
  4. Good idea with the rigid tubing, would hate to have to walk away from my desk and drain 5Gal on the floor
  5. I've gotten a nod from everyone that matters. I'm more worried about it becoming a distraction, which they will have an issue with. Out of sight - out of mind is what i'm going for. That and i'm trying to not make a mess all over my desk.
  6. So i'm going to put a Fluval Spec V on my desk at work and i'm looking for creative ideas on how to do water changes without a ton of tubing and homer buckets. Trying to avoid everyone in the building asking questions. Its going to be in a corner so i wont have a lot of room to work with, I was thinking an aqua lifter to put water in from a container(trash can?) under the desk. Not sure what the best way would be to get water out and to a sink. Anyone have tanks at work? What do you do?
  7. Your clean up crew will eat it, but it's just putting those nutrients back into the water. If it's not growing out of control and it's not bothering you then you can just leave it.. Most people stress about every bit of algae in the tank and drive themselves mad in the process.
  8. There's no reason it wouldn't work if you're lily pipe supported the GPH flow you were looking for. I'm assuming you're looking at glass lily pipes? Long term your biggest issue is going to be coralline algae growing in the inside it. Otherwise you can use something like this: http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/return-jet.html Good Luck
  9. having the skimmer in the same section as the return pump is going to give you issues. I would chop the top and put the skimmer in the first section and return pump in the second. Or rig up some cool turf scrubber design using the bio ball section and skipping the skimmer all together.
  10. I'll start a build thread here soon, but Floor drain - Check, Sink - Check, Washing machine for socks and towels - Check, 30pint dehumidifier draining to said floor drain - Check, Tie in fish room to home return ducting - Not done yet. Need to talk to an HVAC pro to make sure my plan wont screw up the rest of the house HVAC first. I don't want to vent outside as I don't want to be pulling in outside air somewhere else in the house. Id rather run a small mini split than vent to the outside
  11. Think that GFO has anything to do with the bleaching? Do you blow the crud off your rocks or clean the sand? How much detritus is sitting on the bottom of the fuge? Like Surf&Turf said, what's your tests day? Remember those FTS people post are after they spent 4 hours cleaning the tank and moving the sand around. You dont see it on a random Tuesday evening
  12. I really like the Sicce pumps, They are pretty much the only brand i'll use for the small pumps now.
  13. How many people have had their neighborhoods plowed yet?
  14. My 5 year old got himself ready to go outside yesterday... He put on his rubber fire fighter boots with no socks. He stepped off the porch and his boots immediately filled with snow. He only lasted about 30 seconds outside before he went back in.
  15. Only if your toes smell like rotting seafood
  16. Love these unique sized tanks! What the plan for long term water movement? I would probably go with a few smaller powerheads at different depths in the tank. Don't want all that crud settling to the bottom with no way to make the long trip up to the overflow.
  17. Take a look at the schools in the area, even if you're not planning on having kids. It goes without saying, but better(safer) schools are almost always where the parents are paying a premium to live. If you decided to rent in a few years, it could be important the people looking to rent. I just bought/sold here in NOVA for no other reason than the schools as my kid was getting ready to start elementary school. http://www.greatschools.org/virginia/virginia-beach/va-beach-city-public-schools/
  18. Its the main beam for the house, it goes into the block wall.. Somewhere along the line (90's) it was a bedroom for a teenager and they skinned part of the beam in MDF. I just left it up and gave it a new coat of paint.
  19. Thanks Tom, I had started with home depot because I know the one in Fairfax has some LVL beams in stock. After talking to two people who didn't know a thing about lumber despite working in the lumber section i gave up. Marco gave me the names of a few I will call tomorrow including 84 Lumber. Had a contractor quote me at 2k today to put five beams in. Told him to have a nice day and showed him the door.
  20. Here is the room back in September. Old moldy storage room And here is what she looks like today.
  21. I've been on hold for two weeks now waiting on getting my structural engineer report back. Good news is that I don't need to add any posts the basement. Bad news is he recommended sistering the joists with LVL beams and I'm having a hard time tracking them down. Talking the the boneheads at the Home Depot lumber section is getting me nowhere fast. I'm nowhere near ready to start ordering the new display tank, but I want to get the floor sorted out before I put the frag tanks/sump/90gal tank down in the basement right in the way. This will be a two phased build, first I want to get the basement fish room up and running. Then I can start planning out the 300ish gallons that will be upstairs in the office. Can anyone recommend a place to get the beams, or a contractor that was reasonably priced when they reinforced the floor?
  22. I haven't made a thread yet. I have everything laid out where I think it will go, but waiting on final word from the engineer next week about my plans to brace the floor. I don't want to start plumbing anything together until I know he doesn't want to put a post in the middle of where my frag tanks are going.
