Since I still have downtime waiting to set up the 180 I browse a ton and find ideas that for some reason make me want to start ripping apart my tank while its empty and do it the best way possible the first time around.

So right now I have a 180 gallon tank with dual corner overflows. Tossing around the idea of removing them since they do take up a good chunk of room. So if I do remove them I could plug the holes bulkheads and a cap or I seen some use glass and silicone not sure if I trust that as much.

so then come down to what overflow system to use...

calfo aka coast to coast ?

reefsavys new ghost overflow?

what other ways could this be done.

or should I just leave them alone.

I ran a 180 with a Calfo cost-to-coast. It worked great. I would do it again. They are tricky to build when they are that big though. It is easy to break 6ft strips of glass.

yea very true guess could make one with acrylic as well.

check out Evan's build thread.  He removed the overflows from his tank.

I was going to suggest that to you as well. Also Monkiboy did something similar with his new build as well. I have always seem to end up working around overflows, probably because it's the easier route. I think the amount of space you save makes a huge difference at the end of the day. If you've got the time and the drive, I say make it happen.

Go coast-to-coast. Make sure you get the dimensions right, otherwise it will be possibly very noisy in a way that can't be fixed with plumbing tricks. (Don't ask me what the "right" dimensions are.... you can tell I don't know, by the fact that people can hear my water noise from the other side of the planet).

The c2c acts as a surface skimmer and improves flow in the tank. Supposedly the narrower the distance from the tank wall that the overflow wall is, the better it is at surface skimming, but make sure you can fit your hand or a net between them otherwise you will never get curious fish out of it.

Yea I'm tossing around ideas now lol. I am kinda liking the ghost overflow just requested a quote on that. If its crazy price I'll probably do something close to monkiboys

Is your tank back tempered?

hmm not sure guess that should be my first thing to find out... not sure what brand the tank is though hmm

do the computer screen test to see if its tempered. if not drilling is easy

i updated my thread with some pics

REMOVE THEM THINGS REGARDLESS....soo much room.....and you can always just run pvs pipes up to an internal oveflow and just cover them with rock towers.

When i cut mine i first used a dremel wheel....it got too hot and melted the plastic which stung ALOT....went out and got one of the multimax things that just oscilate and it worked liek a charm (you can see it laying down in my pics)....it took a little time but was suprisingly easy to do.

if you need pics, instructions, have questions whatever just let me know, monkiboy had alot of good questions when we talked about it.

only thing i would have changed is to make sure that all dimension are big enough to fit your hand in (aka the internal overflow is just barely too small to fit my hand in to clean all corners...not a big deal but i woulda made it about .5 in bigger if i did it over again.

only other thing i wish i coulda have done is do it on one side (like a peninsula tank) and then just have the wall hide the overflow.

if you need to borrow the tool let me know to (or bring the tank over and ill give a hand.....

Tools needed

Dremel or whatever brand multimax oscilating tool

Scraper/razor with handle for getting off old silicone and the last of the plastic from the overflow

eye protection

ear protection

time.....

ill do that test I was told its a marine land tank and according to there site only the bottom is tempered. yea I have everything you listed there and some lol so i would just need time and glass and patience. I really like the ghost as well just going to come down to pricing as they do not list it on there site.

well the ghost overflow wont be available again until mid march after talking to them. So I do not think I will want to be waiting that long to get this tank running.

So I guess I will be doing something like Der ABT and Monkiboy's setup so I will definitely need help with this for sure... So hope the 2 of you don't mind me bugging you soon.:P
