Sharkey18 October 12, 2013 Share October 12, 2013 I stabbed myself with a fragging tool while trying to chip off a piece of encrusted sps. Little spear like thing went right into my finger. Gorgeous puncture / inoculation. It bled quite nicely as evidenced by the drops on the floor and I rinsed it well under water. Now I'm just waiting and watching for some rare tropical infection to develop. Suggestions?
Squishie89 October 12, 2013 Share October 12, 2013 Clean it out with alcohol. Keep an eye on it for infection (redness, extreme tenderness, swelling, color change, pus).

swimmatte October 12, 2013 Share October 12, 2013 Was the tool rusty? If so, you need to worry about tetanus as well. As far as infection, just keep an eye on it. If you see it looks infected, go see a doc.

If you see it looks infected, go see a doc. Tetanus would be my concern as well, make sure you're utd. Other than that, Matt's on point, if its getting infected, then see a dr. The amount of scars I have on my fingers from this past year is pretty monumental, and so far so good... Knock on wood.
kjamaya October 12, 2013 Share October 12, 2013 Squeeze the heck out of your cut to get the blood out. I do this all the time for about a min. Good luck!

bendeng October 13, 2013 Share October 13, 2013 Keep an eye on the cut and be aware of any strange bodily funtions, tenderness, etc. I have read of extremely rare cases where the injection makes you sick internally first before seeing physical signs. better safe than sorry. Jason Rhoads October 13, 2013 Share October 13, 2013 (edited) better just lop it off at the bone. +1 this would be my advice. When in doubt... amputate ! Actually I think you will be just fine; your water is probably relatively clean. Edited October 13, 2013 by Jason Rhoads
ctenophore October 13, 2013 Share October 13, 2013 Tetanus isn't caused by rust; it is a bacterial infection. It is associated with rust because outdoor rusty items tend to be in dirty, anaerobic locations suitable for growth of the tetanus bacteria. In any case, your water is not very clean and you do need to be aware of infection. If you have a history of contracting infections from open wounds then be doubly careful. I've heard stories of injuries like that going bad fairly quickly.
Sharkey18 October 13, 2013 Author Share October 13, 2013 Seems ok today. Swelling is down, no sign of infection. But I've got the bone saw standing by just in case... Thanks Rob!
