YHSublime June 6, 2013 June 6, 2013 Based of that story and you're resources, Paul, it's obvious that you don't know an eagle from a duck billed platypus. That, and folks can now decide how reliable your resources are, in this case, not very.
Origami June 6, 2013 June 6, 2013 Paul, tranquility base here. The eagle has landed. Copy that? I've seen eagles up here in Northern Virginia. They've been making a comeback for years. You can often see them near the Potomac in some areas. Now, get behind a good sized turkey vulture one day and watch them spread their wings, as they do on chilly mornings to warm up. We have a lot of them around here and I've had them fly right in front of my car at times. Their wingspan can get as wide as a car - up to about 6 feet. You always seem to see them at a distance when they're flying or, when up close, they're wings are tucked in - so you never really appreciate just how big these birds can get. It's actually jaw dropping when you see it the first time. Hope the eagle is fine. Pretty cool sight - especially on your rooftop. Sources: Personal experience & Paul.

That is true, we do get possums here but Platypusses are rare. I've seen eagles up here in Northern Virginia. They've been making a comeback for years. I got behind Govenor Chris Christie once and I couldn't see an Oldsmobile on the other side of him, but we don't get turkey vultures here or any other kind of vultures, we don't even get turkeys except at the supermarket.
paul b June 6, 2013 Author June 6, 2013 Once about 15 years ago I was doing a job in Manhattan on a 60 story building near the Hudson River. We were on maybe the 50th floor and we had the glass out of the window because we were doing an asbestos abatement and we needed to put a fan where the window was. I was standing in the window frame looking out when I saw this huge bird circling. He turned and came in my direction and I figured he was just flying in circles because he didn't know where he was going like a lot of tourists we get in NY. Anyway the thing keeps coming toward me and I am watching thinking he will veer off. Nope, he comes straight for me and when he got about 5' from me, he raised up his wings, which were a good 4 or 5' across, he raised his feet at me and OMG, those talons are huge, and he stopped inches from my face. After I changed my underwear I found out that she has a nest a few floors below and was protecting it. I read about it in the newspaper. Not the part about me, the part about the nest.
Origami June 6, 2013 June 6, 2013 ^^LOL. That's a great story, Paul. Now, why do you figure that he/she stopped? Glare? (JK)

Coral Hind June 6, 2013 June 6, 2013 That is true, we do get possums here but Platypusses are rare. Here is some unsolicited info which is just what this thread is all about. Unless you live "down under" you probably don't have possums either. We have opossums in North America.
countryboy June 7, 2013 June 7, 2013 Speaking of birds, we have a couple of parrots we keep on our sun porch. two summers ago we come home to find one pane of a double pain glass on our sunroom door shattered. We just figured a drunk bird flew into it. Last summer we come home to find one of the very large double pane windows next to one of the birds broke with a hole through both panes of glass. Apparently a very large bird must be going after our parrots and had to of least got a headache to hit the glass that hard. I thought for sure it would be laying on the ground dead but never found a body.
paul b June 7, 2013 Author June 7, 2013 Tom, it may have been the glare. Or the look of fright on my face. Coral Hind, possums, opossums I don't know, they all look like rats. Ridetheducati. that is very cool. Speaking of birds, I have another bird story if you are interested even though I know this is a fish thread.I was diving for lobsters off this lighthouse (that was commissioned by George Washington) and about 30' down it is pitch black and all of a sudden something grabbed my head and was smacking me around. It was huge and I was not thrilled. It had me for maybe 5 very long seconds then let me go. I surfaced and realized it was one of these cormorants that you see on top of the lighthouse. Those things are huge and they swim with their wings unlike ducks that swim with their feet. They dive for fish and maybe thought I was a tuna, or more likely, a blowfish.I think it was that shifty looking one on the chimney, the one with the scowl on his face.
