LCDRDATA February 7, 2013 February 7, 2013 Nah, he just found out he couldn't get any of Jan's food....
jimlin February 7, 2013 February 7, 2013 haha, going on a eating spree due to shortage of jan's food.
Coral Hind February 7, 2013 February 7, 2013 That's a smart seal. He lets the sharks do all the work catching the fish then he comes and kills the shark and eats the full stomach.
Origami February 7, 2013 February 7, 2013 That's a smart seal. He lets the sharks do all the work catching the fish then he comes and kills the shark and eats the full stomach. I hadn't thought of it that way, but ain't it the truth! And, with the huge liver that sharks have, he's getting a ton of high-calorie nutrition. It will be interesting to see if other seals in the area pick up on this.
davelin315 February 8, 2013 February 8, 2013 Would be devastating if they did... shark populations are already in severe decline from finning, if the overabundance of seals turned into a bunch of seals killing sharks the imbalance in the oceans could cause populations to crash of many species.
jimlin February 8, 2013 February 8, 2013 from the video it seems like they are only able to pick off the smaller sized sharks. i think the seal will have a really bad day if it went after a large great white.

Open water sharks would be at less risk, I would suspect. Is this seal truly unique? Is this learned behavior? We know other species can learn new hunting techniques by observation. Very interesting behavior.
Muddy357 February 8, 2013 February 8, 2013 How about this video of a killer whale attacking a great white shark and it killed it.
