LOL. What some folks won't risk to save a couple of bucks. Sure, it'll work but there's not that much gasket contact area that's under pressure using this approach. That reduced area is all that's keeping water off the floor and preventing perhaps thousands in property damage. No thank you. I'll stick to using the right tool for the job.

Thats the type of bulkhead that came with my biy sump. It has a flat gasket though instead of a round one. It has worked fine for years, but I dont like the amount of plumbing sticking out into the tank. Makes it hard to shove my pipe cleaner into it to clean.

Yep. If you're trying to shave off ~ 5 bucks at the bulkhead stage, you might strongly consider another hobby. Craziness.

When I got my 75g, which was used, it had a similar makeshift thing in it instead of a regular bulkhead. Of course I took it out! After removing it, it turned out that the hole was only for a 1" bulkhead, but they had 1.5" pipe coming out of it because of the size of the piece used to make the DIY "bulkhead".

Not advocating spending money for no reason but I've learned over the years that spending a bit more to do it right the first time will save you time and money in the long run. I think this fits into that category, I'd rather spend the extra $10 and skip a trip to Chipolte than risk serious problems down the road.
