flooddc August 11, 2012 August 11, 2012 Has anyone experience with purple tang? I read that they are much more aggressive than every other tangs. Saw one for sale (quite far away too), but not sure if it will play well with my existing fish.
SunWyrm August 11, 2012 August 11, 2012 At 6" mine rules the tank (and was the first fish in the 180), but he's pretty peaceful about it - a little flaring/tail swipes when other large fish were added. He loves the orange shoulder, and they and the rabbitfish pair swim together constantly. But every fish is different. If your signature's up to date - how big is your yellow tang and how big is the purple tang you're looking at? I'd be careful with both in a 125, but depending on their size and how you introduce them, it may work.
hlem August 11, 2012 August 11, 2012 I bought an adult purple tang, add it to a tank full other fish, tangs, Angels, among several others, and he fit in without any aggression. But he was in a large community tank already, before entering my tank.
Jan August 11, 2012 August 11, 2012 Mine is not the largest fish in the tank and is very peaceful. It doesn't bother anything.

The seller told me the purple tang is about 4-5 inches. So, my major concern would the baby hippo (1.5 inch). Oh well! maybe just keep my eye on a small blue Caribbean tang and another yellow tang.

Just a bit worry about my baby hippo tang.
trockafella August 11, 2012 August 11, 2012 Mine at 2+" established dominance early. Its peaceful, but not timid at all. It will even take food from my Harlequin tusk sometimes. Very very beautiful though.
flooddc August 11, 2012 Author August 11, 2012 Hmm! very tempted...(but still adore my hippo). BTW, are "purple tang" really purple or it's dark blue? I have never seen one in person. Seen pictures online, but maybe they are under certain type of light or photoshopped.
SunWyrm August 12, 2012 August 12, 2012 (edited) I wouldn't be worried at all about your hippo. They'll probably swim together before long, he should be fine with other tangs as long as they are not zebrasoma. This is a good view of the purple that mine has (Not my image, I don't have a very nice one of him yet) though the purple may look a tad different depending on your lighting. Coral Hind August 12, 2012 August 12, 2012 I have had a few purple tangs and they have all been pretty nice to the other fish. Nothing like the other more aggressive tangs.
flooddc August 12, 2012 Author August 12, 2012 Okay, I am convinced! Now is the harder part.... convincing my boss! it's going to be tough.
Steve175 August 12, 2012 August 12, 2012 I agree: my purple is a model citizen. Will do fine with a blue hippo. Add him to tank with lights out overnight.
