So I had a case of bryopsis that was definitely moving towards the end result of taking over my tank. So I tried water changes, etc., but this stuff is able to do well in low-nutrient environments. Eventually I tried the magnesium method. I read on RC that only Kent Tech M really works, and I was sceptical. So I tried the ESV magnesium I had on hand. No results. I then tried Kent Tech M. I used a whole 22 ounce bottle (or around that size) in my 11.4g over the course of a week. Since then, the bryopsis has practically disappeared. I'm a believer! Just need to be careful doing it as raising mag that high influences alkalinity, so you need to be careful to avoid a spike. But this method really works!

Has anyone pinpointed what is in kent and not in the other mg supplements?

I know I saw a list somewhere, but offhand I'm not sure where it was. Interestingly, on the actual Tech M bottle it only lists the Mag ingredients (magnesium sulfate & magnesium chloride).

It would be interesting to have lab analyze both and find out what is different. Then take that element and sell it as bryopsis control ;)

Maybe I shouldn't be sharing this idea...

no way of guaranteeing that that chemical alone, and not that chemical IN PROPER PROPORTIONS with with MgCl etc is responsible.

Does this work for other types of algae, or just bryopsis?

just bryopsis.

best solution i've had for hair algae = sea hare.

I beat bryopsis a while back too. I tried the Kent M, but the gallon bottles were like $40, so I bought Home Depot Mag Chloride for $17/50# and Mag Sulfate from CVS for $20/50# and eradicated the bryopsis and had enough Mg solution to dose for 2 more years.

That unknown ingredient in Kent M is called "hype".
