bcoop78 May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 Hey guys, some of my zoas have not opened up for days. Others stay open 24-7. I am worried about the closed ones. Here are my parameters: Temp- 77-78F PH - 7.75-8.0 Alk- 8.2 dKH Ammonia < .25 mg/ml Nitrate .75 ppm I have not measured calcium or magnesium lately, but I know they are high. Here is a pic: I appreciate your advise and expertise in advance!
Almon May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 I think most problems with zoas outside are related to light and flow. Pests, parasites, and the pox also cause problems. But maybe they are just resting....
yauger May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 they don't look terrible.. but if they close up completely and look aggitated you can dip them in Lugols iodine or hydrogen proxide.
SunWyrm May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 How long do you dip them for in iodine or hydrogen peroxide? is it diluted at all or just straight? I've got a couple colonies that are completely closed.
jaddc May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 I wouldn't do anything. They are not closed completely, so they are probably acclimating. If they start dying (melting away in goo), then I'd take them out, cut away the dead polyps and dip the healthy ones. J
Der ABT May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 i do a dip in h202 close to 50/50 if my zoa's are angry for more than 2 or 3 days.... i probably leave them in there for 1-2 min...usually does the trick... could be anything from copepods aggitating them, spaghetti worm or something along those lines...or could be a pest...keep an eye on them if your thinking pest...and possibly do a revive/coralrx dip first then do h202 a day or two later. least thats my 2 cents
jaddc May 8, 2012 May 8, 2012 I guess practically, a dip wouldn't hurt the Zoas. So if it is convenient to dip (i.e. if they are on a plug on not on the whole rock), then dip. Otherwise, just be patient.
bcoop78 May 8, 2012 Author May 8, 2012 Thanks guys! The zoas are all on a stick-like rock. Should I dip that in peroxide? If so, at what strength and for how long?
bcoop78 May 8, 2012 Author May 8, 2012
Too much light CAN kill zoas!

my radion maxes out at 40%, and the zoas are near the bottom of a 24" tank.
yauger May 9, 2012 May 9, 2012 Hydrogen peroxide solution should be around 30/70 of tank water mix. Some use more but I've found that this mix works just fine. Leave the frag in the solution for 2-3 minutes. Use turkey blaster to agitate the solution. Lugols iodine should be 8 drops to 1 cup of tank water for a strong dip. I would leave the frag in the solution for 3 minutes and use the turkey blaster to agitate the solution. Always dip Lugols last. Coral rx is okay just not as effective.
bcoop78 May 16, 2012 Author May 16, 2012 I decided to wait it out, and whatever was bugging them has stopped.. I did knock a few blue-legs off of them yesterday, and today they are all open and happy...
Sharkey18 May 16, 2012 May 16, 2012 Zoas are just temperamental. Unless they are melting or closed for more than a week I leave them alone.
