hlem April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 Thought a rhomboid/Labouti/lineatus wrasse are expensive? http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversden/ItemDisplay.cfm?c=2733+3&ddid=150287 v
roni April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 that one doesn't do it for me. I like the rhomboid/lineatus more. To be honest, the bell's and earlei's coming out recently don't do it for me either...at least in the price range of greater then $1K/fish.

Some of it is the difficulty in collecting these wrasses, both in terms of depth and because there are only a couple places you can legally collect them. I think it's the same reason gem tangs are so pricey. I've heard one guy talk about diving with a huge school of gem tangs swimming but it was in an area that's illegal to collect from. The wrasse that I'm considering for the tank are the psych head wrasses....http://www.bluezooaquatics.com/productDetail.asp?did=1&pid=929&cid=289
Incredible Corals April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 I think the melanurus wrasse is still one of the most beautiful and under rated out there. Just can

trockafella April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 Speaking of which. I need one of those. Fishie has one that's beautiful and has so much personality. This next time around I will definitely start with one of those! They are great if you dont like inverts. Mine destroyed crabs and snails. It was very beautiful and active, til it ended up on the floor.

hlem April 19, 2012 Author April 19, 2012 scratch that then. must find reef safe wrasses, that dont cost $1k! there a lot of reef safe wrasses... try any of the fairy type. but again, they are all jumpers, you'll need to cover the top.. i've lost like 10 wrasses from jumping

hlem April 19, 2012 Author April 19, 2012 oh, definitely. i have a completely enclosed canopy. i dont know why anyone would buy a wrasse with an open top... because the "anyone"... bet on that his tank is big enough so the wrasses wouldnt jump...
roni April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 (edited) They are great if you dont like inverts. Mine destroyed crabs and snails. It was very beautiful and active, til it ended up on the floor. My melanurus hasn't decimated my crab/snail population...At least that I've seen. The melanurus is a an awesome fish...For any of these wrasses, a tight fitting cover is necessary. Simply having a canopy isn't enough IMO. They will find tiny cracks to jump through. I lost my filament wrasse to a 1" gap between my two screens that I didn't readjust during feeding. The other thing about a canopy is that wood/metal is a much harder surface then mesh. If they bash their heads against something other then mesh, it's probably not good for their long term health...jmo. also hitting your lights is probably not good for them. Making mesh tops for the tank takes about 2 hours and $30 and is well worth it if you have jumpers...imo. Edited April 19, 2012 by roni

MBVette April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 I have a closed top, that only has thumbholes to slide the plexi over. My darn male flasher wrasse somehow found his way out of there one day.
trockafella April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 My flasher wrasses jumped out a very small opening as well. My melanarus jumped out with no lid, though I had it for almost a year. It was a really awesome fish, I actually found it cool how it attacked crabs/snails. It also ate worms and other things crawling around. Ryan, people keep them without lids just like people do other silly things in this hobby! If you willing to spend a little coin, go with velvet wrasses, they are one of my absolute favs, or a mystery wrasse is another nice choice.
Mike Mann April 19, 2012 April 19, 2012 Ornate Wrasse are beautiful and reef safe. Vivid has them for only $40. http://www.vividaquariums.com/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=01-4129-S&Category=Fish:Wrasse&SortBy=Price
SunWyrm April 21, 2012 April 21, 2012 (edited) I've kept a few flasher wrasse without lids. The main reason one of mine jumped was because he was in a tank with fast/sudden moving, large fish such as tangs and rabbitfish. I never had them jump when they were by themselves or with calmer tank mates. Never should have moved them and I'm keeping lids on my future wrasse. Edited April 21, 2012 by YiatzOfEden
