BowieReefer84 January 20, 2012 Share January 20, 2012 Caught one of the three emerald crabs I recently added using his claws to pick polyps off my poccilopora. Is this normal? Why can't he go after the bubble algae instead...
treesprite January 20, 2012 Share January 20, 2012 Emerald crabs love poci! The first frags of poci I had (one red one green) an emerald crab picked the green one to death and the red almost to death.
Cliff Puckstable January 20, 2012 Share January 20, 2012 Dang, and I thought they were reef safe. Do hermits eat corals? I always find hermits hugging it out with some of my corals.
dakotasreef January 20, 2012 Share January 20, 2012 I had a very large emerald actually break tips off of sps. Had I not seen it myself I would not have believed it.
treesprite January 20, 2012 Share January 20, 2012 As far as I know, hermit crabs just kill snails, though I don't know about the really huge ones. I took the crabs all out of my tank. However I often think I should put hermit crabs back in....
BowieReefer84 January 20, 2012 Author Share January 20, 2012 Welp, this stinks. Hopefully they will make quick work of the bubble algae so I can get them out of the tank. They are small ones too.
Coral Hind January 20, 2012 Share January 20, 2012 I always thought they were coral safe. I guess I need to watch out for them now.

BowieReefer84 January 21, 2012 Author Share January 21, 2012 I am really frustrated. I saw a crab sitting in the pocci again tonight... I'll give them some time, but may pluck them out if it keeps up.
Big Country January 21, 2012 Share January 21, 2012 I feel your pain man, I put emerald crabs in my frag tank to take care of algae. Got tired of the nasty egg crate and removed it along with most of the algae. Couple days later noticed one of my nice acans missing 5 or 6 heads and found an emerald crab on the bottom of the frag rack. Haven't lost any more heads so it must have been him eating my acan. It's in the display now, there's some algae in there and plenty of polyps to keep him busy. Misbehavior in the display tank earns a trip to the sump to do battle with my very large green serpent starfish.
