B216adkins March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 This weird thing has been growing on my rock with mushrooms. At first i thought it was a very mushroom but its not. Because above it is tiny ones growing. What is the name of this and where did it come from? Is the thing bad or good?
Coral Hind March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 I would nuke it with kalk paste or one of the store bought products.
B216adkins March 15, 2011 Author March 15, 2011 Aptasia, they are bad... how do you kill or get rid of them?
Origami March 15, 2011 March 15, 2011 Joe's juice, Aiptasia-X, kalk paste, vinegar (injected), and lemon juice (injected) are all chemical means that work. Peppermint shrimp have also been used with success to get rid of these.
LanglandJoshua March 18, 2011 March 18, 2011 I second Peppermint shrimp, I have three of them and have never seen any. Even after being told that I was getting frags, and colonies from tanks that KNEW they had aiptasia. I dont like to put chemicals in my tank that I dont have to.
gmubeach March 18, 2011 March 18, 2011 My cleaners killed my peppermints systematically.... So if you have cleaners this may not be an option
Chad March 18, 2011 March 18, 2011 I am a big fan of injecting the buggers... It is strangely satisfying to watch them shrivel up and turn white after being injected (vinager is my weapon of choice). You can usually talk your local veterinarian into giving you some syringes.
Origami March 18, 2011 March 18, 2011 It looks like you've also got a little patch of GSP (green star polyps) on that rock in back. Intentional? If you've only got a few Aiptasia and they're all accessible to you, I'd just inject them or use a product like Aiptasia-X. If you've got a farm going, and some are not easily accessed, go with a biological solution as they will get into most of the hard to reach areas. However, it's possible to have them in other places, too - in overflows, etc. - and it's tough to expect that these can be eradicated by shrimp if they can't get to them.
Saltwaterworx March 18, 2011 March 18, 2011 Piggybacking Oragami. IMO Injecting is good at the first sight of one or two aiptasia. Or just tanks full of predators instead of corals. Any more, or if some are located in areas like the sump, go with peppermint shrimp. For areas not accessable to livestock (overflow) try to inject them. Whatever you do, don't try to manually remove them! A ripped up aiptasia turns into an aiptasia farm in no time! I have to admit, I'm more of a pepp man! They act as aiptasia assassins. On research and experience, I can say about 3 in 5 will destroy aiptasia for you. I wouldnt put too much faith in anyone selling you an aiptasia eating fish unless you see him do it. Regardless of what info is online.
