armymedic October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 Tank seems to be cycling well. Been over a month now. Water test is within normal limits. thinkig of putting in a couple of fish to get the process moving along. I have read different types of hardy fish, but was thinking a couple of small percula's? I know i would like to have those later on and really hate to put in a couple of damels that i would not want later. Is this do able at this point?? Im being told by the LFS that you can. Just wanted a second opinion. LFS will tell you what you want to hear versus what you should hear! thx
Coral Hind October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 I have added clowns as my first fish without any problems. I would recommend getting some local tank raised ones to increase your chances. They would be already eating well and not stressed from shipping. There are at least four members in the club that breed and sell clowns.
zygote2k October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 Introduce the shyest fish that you will want to have. It'll get to be the king of the tank in the beginning, rather than having to fight for territory later.
armymedic October 1, 2010 Author October 1, 2010 How do i get a list of who raises the clown fish here so i can get a couple from them?? i would much rather buy from someone that is reputable versus a LFS. thx.

You come to the meeting on Oct 9 and I sell you one! The again, I'm not sure if I am considered reputable.
Coral Hind October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 Dbartco is very reputable. Check out the meeting thread below for a great deal on clowns. http://www.wamas.org/forums/topic/39540-oct-9-meeting-tradesale-thread/page__view__findpost__p__336179

F&Fmgr October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 Thanks Club President for the endorsement of ANY of the reputable LFS that are premium sponsors of this club. .02
Origami October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 I will add this, though: I have a 100% success rate with fish from F&F. Personal experience. I attribute it to good quarantine procedures, and and their willingness to make sure the fish is well acclimated before letting it go out the door. I've had varying levels of success, though, in other places. My lowest level of success is around 67% - a 1 out of 3 loss. In that case, I bought the fish at an extreme discount, knowing full well that they were being "flipped" quickly from wholesale through retail. In other words, I knew that the risk was being put on me and that I'd have losses. These are different business models. Both can work. The hobbyist needs to be aware and willing to take on the responsibilities of extra care, quarantine, and losses, that will result from the short-stay, high-volume model. I've also got a clown from Doug (dbartco) that is doing very, very nicely.
dbartco October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 Thanks Club President for the endorsement of ANY of the reputable LFS that are premium sponsors of this club. .02 C'mon Sean. Missed a chance there to jock you LFS's - sorry. Yes, we have a number of great stores in the area. Check out or sponsors page for a store near you. They have a much better variety than any of us "basement breeders".
armymedic October 1, 2010 Author October 1, 2010 lol. jeez guys i wasn't slamming all LFS's, but if you head down to the PETCO i was at last night and they had a dead fish in with the rest and was not concerned, i get a bit worried about the lacadaisacal attitude of some of them......
CHUBAKAH October 1, 2010 October 1, 2010 PETCO I wouldn't consider a LFS personally, but that's me. You also need to be very careful whomever you decide to get your fish and other animals from. One can never be too safe in this hobby.
armymedic October 2, 2010 Author October 2, 2010 thats why i would really like to get them from a member here. some of the stores like PETCO are in it for volume not so much reputation.
CHUBAKAH October 2, 2010 October 2, 2010 do you consider roozens a reputable LFS? You also need to be very careful whomever you decide to get your fish and other animals from. One can never be too safe in this hobby. I personally don't know of anyone that gives you the variety they offer most of the time. They seem to always have something I NEVER see at any other shops. Just be sure to quarantine anything that comes from there, or ANY shop for that matter. Some of us have had to learn the hard way. I'd say that Roozens is for the more experienced reefer who knows what they want, and what they are looking at. A lot of there stuff is trans shipped, so it comes straight from the reefs and does not go through any type of treatment. The service you get is going to be hit or miss but it's for sure an experience going there. I always enjoy it myself and try to make it there a few times a year, but it's two hours from me.
