Return pump idea question please

Hi all!! I'm set up my new 90gallon tank and also looking for return pump. Which pump is the best in sump for 90gallon ? My tank is 1in bulk head use for return. Please help me out.

Mag drive pumps are reliable. MAybe a mag 5 or 7. although the mag 7 might be too much flow for a 1" drilled overflow.

Thank you Dave I had mag 7 For my 55 gallons and used 3/4 tuping size it is not really strong. I want something stronger then that, but the mean thing is I use bulk head size 1". I'm really don't know anything about plumping. It is killing me now :((

I think i have a used mag 9 and 12. You could use a ball valve to dial back the flow where you want it.

The tank has 2 hold, one is 1.5 and the other is 1. So I do 1.5 for drain and 1 for return pump. The mean thing is I don't know what I have to buy to set it up for the drain and the return.

What type of sump do you have? Are you planning to run the pump internally or externally? I would check out other people's tanks to get an idea. I think a mag 9.5 would be a good choice.

I just use my 65gallons tank for my sump and I plan for internal pump

Will you run anything else off of the pump like a UV unit or media reactor? You could put a hose barb onto the mag pump and run a hose up to the 1" bulkhead.

not right now, I will do that later when I have extra money:)) for now I think just skimmer and pump and maybe I save litter space for refugium.

I would try the mag 9.5 then which would give you some capacity later on to add on some low flow items like a media reactor.

If you are going with mag drive pumps consider they do much better with big pipes. I would even thing about using 1.5 spaflex up to the 1" bulkhead. They do very badly with any flow restriction. Whether it was on a reef or a pond, I always regretted anything less than 1.5" with a mag.

 

I am thinking a Mag7 would be OK if you plumb it right. Maybe a Mag 9 at most. Too much flow through the pump gives you microbubbles and lots of drama if you press the capacity of the overflow (normally 1000 gph with a 1.5 bulkhead).

 

It is better to get flow in the tank with powerheads and keep the turnover to the sump relatively modest. It just makes life simpler.

I used a mag 9.5 on my 55gal. Keep in mind you will loose flow due to head lose. There are many calculators out there that will calclate your flow. Do a search on google for head lose calculator.

I would go with an e-heim. Most reliable pump I've ever used and run cooler than mags = less heat transfer.

on my 90 I was using a eheim 1262 worked great. much less heat then a mag pump. I at one time had a quiteone 2200 again little to no heat but the eheim is just a stronger pump. I then switched to a red dragon 5m3 :-). on this one I had used this one pump to feed the display, the fuge and my calc reactor :-) expensive pump but no noise and no heat

Go with It will handle your needs for a 90. It's relatively cheap, easy to find parts for at Petco, and doesn't make too much noise if you isolate it from the bottom of the sump. Pump heat on a 90 shouldn't be an issue unless you already have heat issues from lights and powerheads. If you want to increase the current from the return, use an eductor on the end going into the tank.

If you use an Eheim or Dragon, then you'll find that parts aren't readily available in an emergency. Mag drives have been around for years and you can even find them in hardware and garden stores.

FWIW, I use a Mag 9.5 on my 60 and it is teed off to supply the fuge. I use a 50w heater and my temp stays at 77.8
