I picked up a pair of black clowns from petco (alexandria) the other day for 44 dollars! They were new arrivals I got very lucky, I could not pass them up. I think it is possible they were priced wrong. They also had a large supply of other clown fish at good prices.

They are in my QT and seem to be doing well!!

.. did i say I was at petco? i mean my friend was...

The salt section at the petco in winchester is full of green slime algae. It's pretty gross.

Ehhhhh! FWIW, the tanks looked well maintained, sg=1.021 nitrate=~15, very clear water, no signs of disease or dead fish in tanks.

I worked as the fish guy at petco and ptmoran in fairfax. They were chain stores but the fish department was always in great hands. Healthy fish, qt practices, good prices. All chains are not alike.

The Petco in woodbridge is always very well kept, I have purchased fish and never had problems, I wouldnt buy a tang there or certain other kinds (that are sensitive) but Ive never had any issues and the prices arent bad.. The one in woodbridge is listed as "grade A" for aquatics or saltwater, so they actually carry a nice variety of fish, inverts and even a few ok corals from time to time.. I got my black clown there to for $22, cant beat that wen there on sale..

Maybe I just got stuck with the crummy petco. Every tank is covered in slime algae and they took all the water out of the invert section for some reason. It's not very nice.

No the one in alexandria near my work is awful, the carry like 4 fish, a couple chromis, a couple clowns, a few damsel and the a yellow tang once and a while.. So dont feel bad... The one at the end of keene mill rd is awful too, if they sold slime algae they would be a great store.. I stopped into that one a few weeks ago while passing through and they must have had 45 clowns in one of those small tanks, it looked like a goldfish tank..

Mine sells "live rock" too. The only bad part is that it never originally looked like LR and now it looks like this.

Note: Not an actual picture from the store, but you get the idea.

I have to say that I would probably buy a fish from Petco before I would walk across the street and buy the same species at Congressional even if Congressional had it cheaper.

Congressional is a joke! I buy from Petco every once in a while. I would highly suggest quarantining fish any fish you get from them though.

Although I am a few months into the hobby, I will admit that I have been to Petco for information/pricing/etc and I have been really impressed with the short lady at the Petco in Manassas and also the main fish guy in Ashburn (apparently he used to work at an aquarium in Texas)...I will say that the Ashburn location was treating a disease with copper ~6 weeks ago or so when I was buying live rock...they would not sell me the rock to avoid a setup disaster. Although I had to go to elsewhere for the rock, I appreciate their honesty! I was extremely disappointed with the staff and tanks at the Petco in Fairfax, so I'll never go back to that location again...

That's my Petco experience!

They shouldn't have been putting copper in a tank with Liverock b/c it would render it useless. For a reef aquarium that is.

anything calium carbonate based will rendered copper useless and precipitate it in the for of copper carbonate

Listed as grade A? What does that mean and according to who?

Copper carbonate is reef safe?

Grade "A" allegedly means they can order more stuff, there allowed to order more high end fish and inverts, I believe it bc they have much higher quality fish there then I have ever seen at another petco... Dont get me wrong, there not the most upscale place in Nova, but pretty nice selection for a petco..

Is their grade posted somewhere in the store where we would be able to see it? Now I'm curious :)

You can ask someone in the aquatic department, a lot of the people probably dont know, but who ever runs the department should know..
