Jan June 20, 2009 June 20, 2009 Something ripped this poor guys insides out. He's all beat up. I put him in another tan. What else can I do for him? He's very weak and badly ripped up.
L8 2 RISE June 21, 2009 June 21, 2009 I'd say I agree with forrest, as much as I hate euthanizing, if it's insides are ripped out... Any chance of a pic?

It's too weak and badly injured. After searching the net I found this picture the only difference is it has a larger rip on the top and it's ripped at the disc by two of it's arms. It stays out in the open too. I can't find my lousy camera.
L8 2 RISE June 21, 2009 June 21, 2009 I dunno, if it were me, and its injuries were only like that, I'd put it in the refugium for a while andc give it food... Serpents are pretty hardy... I'd bet that it woyld pull through.
Jan June 21, 2009 Author June 21, 2009 Well it's worse than this. The hole on top has some internal organs coming out of it. It's in another tank. I dunno, if it were me, and its injuries were only like that, I'd put it in the refugium for a while andc give it food... Serpents are pretty hardy... I'd bet that it woyld pull through.
Boret June 21, 2009 June 21, 2009 DON'T KILL IT!!! I speared one of these when I was planting a Mangrove over 2 years ago, and it actually made it through. Those serpent star fish are really hardy. Give him a chance! Mine looked awful (all bloated) but it is alive and doing great! Before that it almost lost all its limbs when a Undulated trigger ate all them. Hey, don't call PETA on me, I didn't know any better then. I had it for the longest time in my sump and now it lives happy in my refugium. I feed him some Rod's food from time to time.

This poor guy is very weak, very skinny and it has lacerations all over the place. It's got brown insides coming out on top. It wont eat. I put it upside down to see if it could turn over and it did. As soon as it can't do things like that anymore I'm going to euthanize it. I keep offering food. I put the food under it and it just moves away. I don't know what else to do. I guess time will tell.
Jan June 23, 2009 Author June 23, 2009 Thank you all for your condolences. It's so nice to see so that so many have a heart for these animals. Now I'm going to get really corny but I don't care... To me the most rewarding part of this hobby is being successful in keeping everything healthy and alive. The fact that they're also pleasing to the eye and entertaining is really secondary to me. It really stinks whenever I lose any livestock, irreleveant of cost, size or species. We're the keepers for these magnificent creatures and as far as I'm concerened that's a huge responsibility. I wish I could have done more. I enjoyed that starfish. He would take food right out of my hand. Oh well, sometimes we can only do as much as we can do.

You're a good hobbyist - too many people only care about how appealing a tank is to their eyes, not about providing a happy home, and those people have no business having aquariums.

I have to agree... often times I'll see read about a fish that's having trouble making it, or isn't looking good, and someone will chime in and say "well luckily it's a pretty cheap fish, not too big of a deal, you might as well just euthanize it and get another" or something along those lines. I personally can say that I've had four losses, everywhere from free fish to 50 dollar fish, and I really have never even thought about the "money lost" or the "oh well it was free" when I'm having to net it out, it's usually a "darnit, how did I let this happen, poor fish" sort of feeling.
