Jim December 20, 2008 December 20, 2008 I just purchased a 120 gallon (4x2x2) tank and have decided to make the jump from freshwater to salt. I anticipate eventually having a reef, but I'd like to start a FOWLR tank first. That being said, all my equipment purchases are going to be made with a future reef setup in mind. I have the tank now, plan on building the stand and canopy soon and will figure all the rest of the equipment out from there. My first purchase is going to be The Coral Reef Aquarium by Ron Shimek. Just for reference, I live about a mile south of Old Town Alexandria so if anybody wants to show off their tank at some point I'd be willing to take a look . I look forward to meeting everybody in the future. Take care, Jim
reefhunter December 20, 2008 December 20, 2008 Welcome to WAMAS! Best move you have made is joining the club. You will find endless amounts of used equipment, corals and knowledge here. I am in Leesburg but you are welcome to come check out my reef anytime.
gastone December 20, 2008 December 20, 2008 Jim, welcome to the club. I wish I was as smart as you... reading books and joining WAMAS before moving forward on your purchases. I've got a copy of Bob Fenner's "The Conscientious Reef Aquarist" if you'd like to borrow it (I am a bit far away, but I can bring it to the next group event). It's a bit dated, but he manages to cover quite a few different ways to set up and maintain reef aquaria. Garrett.
capsfan December 20, 2008 December 20, 2008 Welcome! I read books and whatnot for months before I set up my 55 gallon. It really proved to be beneficial. A lot of resources can be found online like here on WAMAS also. Good luck on your saltwater experience!
jason the filter freak December 20, 2008 December 20, 2008 Welcome! Good to see you're planning stuff out.

zygote2k December 21, 2008 December 21, 2008 As far as books are concerned, I'd recommend the following: Dynamic Aquaria Modern Coral Reef Aquarium vol 1-3 the 2 Calfo books.

I'm a little confused by the Modern Coral Reef books. I was under the impression that each volume was just an updated version of the last. Is this not the case?
