Cerith Snails

Well I got a Cerith Snail and it keeps trying to crawl to the top. I had to knock him back down. Anyways on keeping it doing its cleanup duties and not trying to get out?

Some of mine will crawl to the top of the waterline to clean but they've never tried to escape! There's nowhere for them to go if they did.

the snails won't go out of the tank. If they are going up that high, it's probably because there is something for them to eat on the glass that high. Often during the night a lot of my snails migrate to the top of the glass, then when the lights come on they go back down.

I've noticed an interesting correlation between my snails that stay on the upper parts of the glass versus those who stick near the bottom - the top-dwellers tend to live longer, as they spend less time near my murderous hermits!

YEAH BUDDY!!! I second that observation... blasted hermits....

 

Although... revenge is a little sweet, white legs tend to be a little bit more... grumpy and so can be used in fish only tanks. Providing they're big enough to fend off the fish... which they proved not so big and tough against a picaso trigger. Didn't mean to do do that to them, but it did give me a little peace of mind after all the expensive snails blue legs have killed on me.

I have several emerald crabs that I think might be time for me to take them out of the main tank. I just need to find a way to do it without knocking everything over in the tank.

Hermits favor ceriths in my tank, and tend to stay away from astreas. Nerites are at moderate risk. Most of the nassarius I have are tiny so the crabs leave them alone, and burying in the sand helps the larger nassarius stay safe, but I've seen crabs with tonga nassarius shells.

I noticed that my snails would go above the water line when my chemistry, especially nitrates were off. I would check just in case. Otherwise, I doubt the snail will actually fully leave the tank and never come back....

I had a rare few or maybe it was the same guy. I wake up in the morning and find a shell about three feet from the tank. I guess he thought he would find other sources of water. Upon further investigation I realized I had the water heat turned a tad to high. After doing some reading they prefer water temps in the mid 70's anything higher than 78 c they go to the surface were the water is cooler due to evaporation.

I wasn't everyday just on rare days. I have white burrber carpet in my house so the black shell stands out in the light as I walk in the living room. I just pick the little guy up up it next to the glass before I know it the little thing is stuck to the glass.
