I have been collecting random frags here and there of zoas. I have also look at around 3,984,475 pictures of different kinds on the web. All or most look as though they are real tight to the rock and grow a big face so to speak. well all mine are growing up up and away fro all their rocks. it looks like a zoa forest not a rock. I'm guessing its a light issue, but that's why I went with shroom's and zoa's to start because I don't have the T5s yet! Anyone have any clues?

they're probably palys and not zoas. palys tend to have larger polyps and extend well above the rock.

I'm betting you have paly or palythoa (same family I believe but different morphology) not zoas look kinda like... these?

I will still work on a few pics. Do the palys (I know that the green button polyps and cinnamon polyps are deff palys) tend to have longer fringes around the face? (sorry don't know the scientific terminology for those things) I have some orange ones close to the top that I know are zoas and don't seem to be extending and still getting bigger, but thought it was because they were up closer to the light!

Yeah in my tank with those lights!

Here are pics.

i know the one on the left is a yellow polyp its all the others i am curious about.

I don't know exactly how many PC bulbs you have, how old they are or the photo period but they may be trying to reach for more light. Try placing the rock higher in the tank.

I have a current usa satellite fixture with dual 96w 10000k daylight and dual 96w dual actinic bulbs, Photo period is blues on at 11 off at 11 with the daylight on an hr after and off an hr before. I'm thinking palys but I do need to work on my lighting.

I am still looking for some replacement bulbs (square pin config) for my PCs or looking to upgrade if anyone can help.

I think palys tend to do grow 'up' because the polyps get so big that they crowd and shadow each other. I have what appears to be the exact same type of yellow polyps you have, and mine started to do the same thing - despite having plenty of light - when the colony started to grow bigger and got crowded.

IMO they are zoas that need more light so they are stretching themselves

I agree. I found if my zoas weren't directly exposed to the lights and slightly higher in the tank that they would "stretch" to get as much light as possible.

More light! More light!

I tossed a 'dead' zoa colony into my refugium about a year ago. It came back to life, and is growing on the acrylic. It stretches way out toward the feeble little Home Depot light.

Thanks for all the info. I will try moving them higher in the tank. I do have some orange zoas on the top that are doing very well actually. But the question still remains zoas or palys?

And the lights are on hold. Budget for tanks not a high priority right this second.
