Yup, I just got 3 peppermints that appear to have been eaten by the aiptasia.

I thought that was just me, I just got 3 peppermints several weeks back, they were gone the next morning. I added 5 a few days ago and they too appear to have been eaten by my aiptasia farm.

That is pretty amusing the pep shrimp got eaten! Predator/prey relationship isn't working the way its supposed to!

I'm going to try again, after I've killed off all the BIG aiptasia... I had one that was 6" tall, and at least 4" across. Killing them is keeping my ALK up very nicely.

Maybe give the peps a head start by going through and cutting all the crowns off the large aiptasias? All that anemone goo in the water might stimulate the peps to rip them up.

 

If you have that many, why not culture some berghia? Now that would be a neat project for SWAP.

That was so freaking sweet to see that aptasia implode like that in the first video. I agree that the larger aptasia might be a problem for the peppermints, but I put 5 of them in my old 180 and they had all the aptasia gone in less than a week. I will admit that I didn't have any monsters like Bob and Rik have, but my rock is still aptasia free to this day. Kill the big ones with whatever injectable solution you feel works best, then get a dozen peppermints to clean up the babies. I've read reports of some peppermints not going after the aptasia in there tanks, so if you get 12 of them, you've got pretty good odds that at least a few of them will have an affinity for aptasia. Worked for me.

I like biological controls - 4 crabs completely cleared my frag tank of TONS of green bubble algae - but so far I haven't had great luck with peppermints and aiptasia.

That odd. My five had their own underhangs where they hung out upside down most of the time. I don't think I ever saw them together. Sorry to hear its not working for you. At least the rest of the 240 is coming along nicely, so visitors shouldn't even be noticing the aptasia anyways.
