I got some live rock from a place a few weeks back which was 100% cured however never had any lights on it. I noticed when I got it home a couple pieces of rock had some very small white looking tubes on it. Just to be safe the rock didn't have anything I ramped up the water to 1.040 and left it that way for two weeks. In the last week I dropped it down to 1.025 and today for the first time I turned the lights on.

I noticed that one of the tubes showing had what looked to be a feather duster on it, so I put a flash light on it and bang it dropped down in to the tube.

I actually have seen some pics of them when they are pretty big in peoples tanks, and thought I may even add one or two of them.

Is there a chance this could be a bad thing, or is it ok to have a few around?

Thanks,

Mark

They are filter feeders, and will help to remove fine particulate matter from your water.

Often small ones spring up spontaneously & multiply....my 110G, in its former life, had hundreds in the sump.

So no worries....

My tank is a mini duster haven.

Feather dusters are cool:) I have a big hawiaan that just regrew its feathers:)

Tanks for the feedback everyone. I've always thought they were pretty cool anyway, I just didn't know of there may be some type that was not good. It's so small now it's very hard to tell what color it may be as well.

ditto, they sprout up all over my tank

I have some live rock that was stored in Rubbermaids for 6 months with no water changes, heat, or movement. After a few weeks in circulating water of the appropriate temperature - feather dusters; and not itty bitty ones - full-grown small feather-dusters. Looks like they can out-survive most anything else.
