David's 75 Gallon Reef

Hi,

This is my 75 gallon reef tank. It has been up and running for 2-1/2 years. It has a shallow crushed coral substrate. The lighting is dual 250 watt 14K bulbs with 2 54 watt geissman T5 Pure actinic bulbs. The Sump is a regular 20 gallon tank. I have a 10 gallon acrylic tank that I have converted to a refugium that is fed from the sump and the water drains back to the sump. I am using a magnum 350 canister filter with the 5 micron filter to polish the water. The return to the main tank from the sump goes through a 57 watt UV sterilzer and then through a 1/3 HP chiller then back to the display. Also I have an auto topoff system that

tops off from evaporation with Deionized water. I am currently not using a kalkwasserreactor. There is a heater in the sump to raise temp when needed. i am using a medusa 2 stage unit for temp control.

Skimming is done with a deltec APF600 which is fed from the overflow in the display tank. I am using a MAG7

for the sump return to the main tank. I am using an ehiem pump to feed water to the refugium. The refugium has dual overflows in case 1 gets clogged. This is extra protection against a flood. The line to the refugium has a ball valve to fine tune how much water is being pushed through the refugium. I am using a reefkeeper II controller for all the lights, To monitor PH and controlling the cycleing of the pwerheads.

I use Reef Crystals for all water changes. Also for water purification there are dual tap water purifiers that can make a lot of water quick. I recently have added a Kent marine phosban reactor. It hangs on the sump and is fed from a maxi jet 1200 with a ball valve to control the flow through the reactor.

I made a hole in the wall so some of my equipment is in the kitchen. The hole leads to a 30" bas cabinet in the kitchen

reeftanksystem1-20-08039.jpg

Here is the cabinet that holds the UV sterilizer and chiller. Notice the holes in the base. Those are for the air intake to the chiller.

reeftanksystem1-20-08030.jpg

The exhaust from the chiller comes out the right side of the cabinet. I used foam to get a good seal between the chiller and the side of the cabinet

reeftanksystem1-20-08040.jpg

Here is the auto topoff. There is a float valve in the sump and one in the resovoir. 1/2" tubing goes to the sump for top off.

Thanks for looking.

Chip, that is a montipora. It was a smaller chunk when i got it 7 months ago from reefermadness.us

It hasnt encrusted yet but it is growing. Originally it was bright red. I believe it is doing well because I can see all the little polyps.

Updates--

1) added melanarus wrasse

6-4-08033.jpg

6-4-08034.jpg

because every wrasse in the past has jumped I have built a fence.

It's not very pretty. I am thinking of painting it black.

6-4-08031.jpg

The fence makes it a lot harder to do work in the tank.

I have it so the front panel can be removed for access in to the tank.

Looks fantastic!!!

Great job David!

What is that green coral, the 3rd pic from the bottom on your first post? Looks great!

That one is a sarcophyton or "toadstool leather"

When the polyps extend they look like this.

Since visiting the aquarium company I decided I need some of seans awesome corals. I have made room in the tank but have only added 1 coral fron sean so far.

Here are some pics of some corals I am happy with the health of them

Everything looks fantastic! Well except that egg crate fence. Instead make a CPVC frame that runs around the edge of your tank or two frames that each cover 50 percent of the top so the can be removed individually then string them with ultra fins pond netting. Paint the CPVC black and you're looking good!

i love that toadstool...looks so much bigger in person..

Well, the egg crate is no longer neccisary as the melanarus wrasse was killed. The clark clownfish and the

cherub angel won't put up with new fish additions. I believe I can add corals to the tank but I don't want to be responsible for another fishes death. I did not know how aggressive the clark clownfish was when I purchased it. I wanted a fish to host in my anenome.

Hello,

It's time for an update.

I have added to my system a typhoon3 extreme RO/DI with a large acrylic resoiver made by NAGA.

And Litre meter III with 2nd pump for auto 2 part addition.

The large green milli had to be fragged to save half of the coral from STN.

Here are pics of the corals(most of them)

click on the picture right below this line for the slide show.

The litre meter 3 dosing set up.

The 2 glass containers are borosilicate glass from the container store.

It is set up to dose 60ml of each part every day.

I still need to manually dose magnesium.

My little niche in the kitchen - RODI unit and purified water container.

There have been quite a few changes in the aquascaping. I have built a rock tower in front of the overflow.

I chose rocks with lots of nooks and cranies for mounting small sps frags. I got some great frags from

a wamas member and bought some at the aquarium company. and mounted frags from the past frag fest.

I have a lot of pictures for you!

What happen to that nice huge what looks like Brain coral you had? And does it grow in a round shape?

Edited by reefmontalvo

Yes, I still have the brain coral. It is in a smaller 30 gallon tank with some other LPS and shrooms.

Here's a big bubble coral from the 30 gallon

1-25-09016.jpg

Heres the brain coral I think you are talking about.

Also my avatar is the brain coral with the colors reversed.

Thanks,

No, I know of no way to control the growth toward an end shape.

It basically is the same shape when it was bought from the marine scene.

It has just grown bigger.

It's a very neat coral to have.

Also the sweeper tentacles are so small there is no warfare between the

brain coral and any others.

The last time I picked it up to move it I found 4 bristleworms

had made a home under the brain.

No harm is done from the bristle worms. It would have been neat

if one of the fishes swooped in and ate a worm.

I have been doing new aquascaping and shifting toward mostly SPS corals

Here are pics from last night.

I have been doing the prodibio system for quite a while.

I no longer need the phosban reactor.
