modelrr September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 I've always liked these crabs and would like to know your opinions on them...do you see them often? ok for reefs?
jamal September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 i wanted one as well. john at brk said that they are not reef safe.
davelin315 September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 They are not cut out for life in a reef tank. They are cold water crabs and don't do well in tanks. I wouldn't put one in your reef.
toastiireefs September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 they would also destroy your reef- they dig and shuffle and flail their "tail" around knocking things over... not a goodidea i love them though
treesprite September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 does anyone know if the ones being sold in the store are captive bred? Years ago I met a woman who has some kind of environmental scientist who was helping to breed them to re-populate because they were becoming an endangered species
trble81 September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 You can always ask John at BRK. He had one in a display tank (that I saw) when we were over there for the social.
gastone September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 Horseshoe crabs feed by filtering through the substrate, and they require an insane amount of re-populating fauna to subsist. I've read online (Dr. Ron's old RC forum) that 50 square feet of well populated substrate would probably do the trick. Making them not an option for me at least.
johnnybv September 24, 2007 September 24, 2007 You can always ask John at BRK. He had one in a display tank (that I saw) when we were over there for the social. Yes, it is actually doing well but most likely overtime he will eat everything in the sand and starve. HE has been in there for about 2 months now. They also get very big, do a nice job sifting sand though. Also my display tank that he is in is a FOWLR, no coral. john
