NRehman July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 Tony...BAD BOY! Wow...! You're absolutely insane..!!! (Of this means...this looks like a GREAAAAT project)! Post more pics on the light setup. I was going to use aluminum channel for my paltry 210g...but yours looks like the way to go... Best, Nadir p.s. As one of those "landlords" who has a rental "including" electricity...I am now going to add a clause about "excessive use and aquariums"... p.s.s. You're still insane...
NRehman July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 (edited) Thanks...Yes it does... (Yet...the ingrateful words..."can you get any closer" come up)..! Did you just screw the metal together or rivet it? Sorry..more questions...HD/Lowes stuff or did you need to go to a supply house..? I'm not sure if you can, but with the space constraints... creating a cantilevered light support on wheels might help you get the light out of the way when you need to do serious work on the tank. One leg of the frame would look like a "C" with the vertical part against the wall. Make it of metal. With one cantilevered frame on each side of the tank, add wheels and screw it together with the lights frame and you should have a somewhat rigid structure. If you got fancy, you could make a telescopic extension with a tad bit more work. Edited July 7, 2007 by NRehman
NRehman July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 On the other hand...if the lights aren't attached to the frame, you could just slide them out...
treesprite July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 wow, awesome project. I have a question for you, since you said you live in an apartment. Are you on the bottom floor or higher? I'm afraid to put up a larger aquarium due to the weight. My electric is included as well.

davelin315 July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 Hey Tony, you're my inspiration to get my tank up and running... especially since you've not only left the hobby and sold me your old tank 2 years ago and are now further ahead in setting up a newer and bigger tank before mine has even made it onto a stand!
YBeNormal July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 Yeah Dave. We often tell people to take their time or to "go slow" in this hobby--but not THAT slow!
Guest tgallo July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 Nadir, it all screws together and you can cut it with tin snips, the hood went together in 1 hour, will post a closer look for you soon.Yes, the lights can just slide out off the grid for access. Treesprite, i have a ground floor apartment with a concrete slab, would never try this with someone below me. Dave, if you run out of hands and could use my help, please LMK. I would be more then happy to assist you in setting up your tank.
NRehman July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 Tony, Thanks. Looks like it goes together like metal studs. I'll check out HD/Lowes today. No need to post more photos - you've got enough to do. I see that the lights sit on the side flanges with the front and back being more open. Best, N
NRehman July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Tony, I think I found the "T" sections for the drop ceilings at Home Depot. These are pretty sturdy. Are these the ones you used? Or did you use some 90 deg angles "L"? I will probably spray paint mine with Rustoleum or such to protect from the salt spray. More photos of your progress... Thanks. Nadir
Guest tgallo July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Wow James, what a great deal, anyone want to do a group buy, i'm dead serious. I went to HD today and found a track to use for my lighting hood, it's made to support sliding doors and will hold 50lbs easy, this thing works great and now i can slide the lighting out of my way .
NRehman July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Tony, Very nice...! (I thought you weren't going to make holes in the ceiling ). That's the stuff I found. SOLID.
Guest tgallo July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Tony, Very nice...! (I thought you weren't going to make holes in the ceiling ). That's the stuff I found. SOLID. I got bored . The track has holes spaced every 16'',most framing is spaced every16'' on center so it only took four 2'' screws to hold up the lighting grid.
flowerseller July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Not to point out the obvious but it looks like it's leaning lower on left.
Guest tgallo July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Not to point out the obvious but it looks like it's leaning lower on left. It does, i must be blind Chip, i dont see it. It must be the way i took the picture, leaning to the right , no camera tripod here. .
lanman July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 Hey Tony, I found an incredible deal for you on baserock. http://cgi.ebay.com/Base-Rock-Dry-Rock-500...oQQcmdZViewItem Pretty good deal, even when you figure in shipping. $1/pound plus shipping. Group order for 1,000 pounds would probably be $500 shipping or so. That's still only $1.50/pound. Almost makes me want to set up another tank. bob
dschflier July 9, 2007 July 9, 2007 Wow this is going to be great to watch. I love the light idea. I am going to try that as well.
Guest tgallo July 9, 2007 July 9, 2007 I'm dreading the plumbing aspect, this thread mite slow down until i get the motivation to start the plumbing.

scott711 July 9, 2007 July 9, 2007 Tony, I would to see/help you with this. I am working on a fish room and need ideas on plumbing. I would be interested in some rock too.
davelin315 July 9, 2007 July 9, 2007 Mohsin/Weap0nX picked up some of the marco rocks and I believe that he really likes them. Don't forget that this is dry rock as well, so there's a whole lot more per pound than live rock! Tony, any ability to come out and help me install some new electrical circuits?
