jason the filter freak June 22, 2007 June 22, 2007 So here it is the replacement for the 3 gallon project that failed miserably. So far it is: 2.5 Gallon by perfecto T5 lighting 50 watt Hydor heater Fluval 2 intake filter Hydor Rotating Deflector Acrylic Splash guard mod 1 digital thermometer Residents: 2 neon blue hermits 1 Zebra hermit 2 Red Tipped Hermit 2 Cerith snails 1 Turbo Snail 2 Mini Stars After nearly 20 hourse of running the filter, with the heater, and lighting on (all 20 hours) I haven't seen temps above 82.5 (this makes me happy) The eclipse had hit 88 in a matter of a few hours with the lighting off. Pics on the build comming soon.
Sugar Magnolia June 25, 2007 June 25, 2007 That's pretty cool! I never would have thought about orienting it in that way, totally different view of the tank. What's the wttage on the T5? How high over the water is the lighting?
Guest Undercoverdork June 25, 2007 June 25, 2007 i have a acrylic 2.5 gallon i was thinking about setting up. Ill keep my eye on this thread to see how it goes.
jason the filter freak July 6, 2007 Author July 6, 2007 I'm up for another DIY project and after the miserable failure of the 3 gallon eclipse project. I turned to this... it's been almost 2 weeks set up now and it looks great, though not nearly complete. It's going to be just a softie tank So far: Yellow star polyps 2 Kenya Tree, one a frag from raff (the bigger), the smaller a random frag from the freebie table at the meeting Green-ish Mushrooms Not so green, green star polyps Zoas Non Corals: 1 Scarlet Hermit 1 Neon Blue hermit 1 Green, red tipped hermit 1 Nassarius Snail 1 Cerith Snail 1 Unknown Conch 2 Feather Dusters 1 Unknow Snail like creature (pictured next to feather duster below, can I get and ID?) Fish: 1 Watchman Goby Equipment: 1 Fluval 2 intank filter (loaded with purigen), connected with a Hydor Rotating Powerhead deflector 1 Hydor 50 Watt Heater 1 Digital Thermometer with temp logging capibility 1 10 watt t5 (will be replaced with higher rated PC light) 1 2.5 Gallon AGA Tank Purigen Fits Perfectly in these trays Got this guy tonight from PetCo tonight for FREE normal price is 34.99 due to having advanced fin and mouth rot. I'm going to see if infact Kordon Rid-Fungus can be used on a fully functioning reef aquarium including inverts and corals The manager at petco told me that he was eating these I really didn't belive it but... what do you know!! It was so cool! He ate is directly out of my targer feeder only moments after being aclimated to my tank. Heres some equipment for the tank and what else I use on the tank.
jason the filter freak July 6, 2007 Author July 6, 2007 I didn't realize i already had a thread going here can this one be combined with my newer one. Or if need be it can be shut down, if not no biggie
Sugar Magnolia July 6, 2007 July 6, 2007 Looking good so far Jason. Good luck with that little fish, hopefully it'll pull through. Not sure about the unknown snail like critter. Possibly stomatella varia.
treesprite July 7, 2007 July 7, 2007 Jason, should I assume from all these projects that you didn't get the 75?
mexicanjavafish July 8, 2007 July 8, 2007 (edited) Jason I love that tank! Edited July 8, 2007 by mexicanjavafish
jason the filter freak July 8, 2007 Author July 8, 2007 Jason, should I assume from all these projects that you didn't get the 75? I have the 75 aga with an over flow built in and a 6 x 54 t5 unit and a giant grey seas aquatics kalk stirrer and a knop c calc reactor and a sequence dart pump and a super squirt compact and a titanium heater and 100 lbs of agonite all sitting in my closet :( I can't convince my parents to let me set it up I'm also missing these components skimmer, controller, and stand/canopy combo Looking good. Where'd you find that T5 unit? It came with a 5 gallon hex i got in a random tank tear down
treesprite July 9, 2007 July 9, 2007 all sitting in my closet I can't convince my parents to let me set it up Jason, that really sucks :(
jason the filter freak July 11, 2007 Author July 11, 2007 I'm going to move to a remotely ballasted PC lighting system on this tank. For soft corals, and maybe an LPS howmany watts should I be looking for here?
jason the filter freak September 25, 2007 Author September 25, 2007 Here is an updat, sorry for the crappy pics they're from a cell phone. Tank occupants: Mushrooms Gsp Cheato Orange Banded Prawn Goby Hermits Stomatella .5 lb live rock 2 lbs live sand Lighting: 6700k t5 Equipment: Mini power head 60 gph Hydor 50 watt heater Fluval 1 intank filter, with purigen and a modified spray bar
treesprite September 25, 2007 September 25, 2007 Thanks for the update. Wasn't their supposed to be a mantis in here at some point?
jason the filter freak September 26, 2007 Author September 26, 2007 with the prawn goby in there... if some one doesn't take him soon (he's in the trades section) I might add a pistol shrimp, but the mantis was to go in the 5.5 gallon.
jason the filter freak October 1, 2007 Author October 1, 2007 wow the fuval 1 got clogged about 2 days ago and I was too lazy to take it out, but holy crap it took such a short period for the cyano to eat my tank. The shrooms and gsp and what not are ok but no i have a neat red lawn over all my argonite.
jason the filter freak October 15, 2007 Author October 15, 2007 Went to the CMAS meeting last night and calibrated my Refractometer as well as having my water params tested in my now super ghetto rigged 2.5 which is now just a just for fun exp till i get my main tank up and running. It had been roughly 3 weeks since my last water change and here are the readings Mind you this is a tank that Runs just two power heads one being a fluval 1 intank with purigen Has 0 supplementation just argonite sand Gets topped off when ever via dixi cup with tap water The only thing I've ever personally tested for on this tank is salinity Results: Mag 1020 Dkh 12.5 Spec Grav 1.028 pH 8.3 Ca 390 Nitrates (Not a surprise) 40 (I'm going to start doing weekly or bi weekly water changes to correct this, but see just how much such a little tank can take (bi-weekly first))
gastone October 15, 2007 October 15, 2007 I would do 100% water changes weekly on a tank that size. Garrett.
treesprite October 15, 2007 October 15, 2007 I would do 100% water changes weekly on a tank that size. Garrett. That would make the tank very unstable.
Sugar Magnolia October 16, 2007 October 16, 2007 That would make the tank very unstable. Why do you say that? I used to do weekly 2 quart water changes in my 2.5 gallon. In fact, Anthony Calfo does weekly 100% water changes in his nano.
treesprite October 17, 2007 October 17, 2007 I guess Im mostly thinking of ph and temperature. In little 2.5 QT I do like 50% every 2 days, in 5g I do 50% every 3 or 4 days. It probably makes a difference that there's no liverock or sand though.
