Adding a tang (tangs?)

Recommended Posts

I have a 90 that has been up for about 7 months. Here's my stocklist:

1x midas blenny

2x false percs

2x blue/green chromis

1x flame angel

1x gold head sleeper goby

1x mandarin

1x neon goby

That's a total of 9 fish. I also have plans for a yellow clown goby, but I really want to add a tang. I've read that it's best to add tangs last, especially since I want a purple tang.

I know that purple tangs are some of the more aggressive tangs, so I'm considering a hippo, as I've read they're more peaceful. I also haven't ruled out a kole tang, but they just don't have the colors of the other tangs. Would having two tangs be overkill? Say a hippo and a purple or a hippo and a kole?

I'll see about taking some pics tonight.

how about a tangwich :bb:

A sandwich which is made by swiping bread inside a Tang drink mix container to collect the dust of the Tang onto the bread.

Originated from the Married with Children TV series.

I was starving to death and only had bread and Tang mix, so I made tangwiches.

Ok, now I don't know if you guys are being serious or not.

Where can you get the orange tangs they use to make the powdered drink mix?

at least one type a zebrasoma for algae, then maybe a one of the bristletooths.

Agree. A purple and a tomini maybe?

I'm thinking of adding the hippo (is he considered a bristletooth?) first and later a kole or purple.

Oh, if it pushes you one way or another, I also have a royal gramma. :)

u have 2 things to think about. How big will the tangs be when u get them! And how much alge do u have growing in ur tank.

I'm pretty much algae free except for some that grows on the glass. Feeding would be primarily Formula 2 flake and nori.

get them small, say3'' and add them at the same time. hippo tangs can be tough, there ich magnets and stress easy.

Sorry, I have to respectfully disagree with all of the above. I have a standard 90g with about 100 lbs live rock and a very similar livestock list as you have. PLUS, I have two tangs - a yellow and a sailfin. They came with the 5 year old tank setup I purchased off of Craig's list. The tangs FIGHT frequently. The tank just isn't big enough for the both of them and they are not adult size yet. They are not happy because I see aggression all the time, and wounds occassionally. If you get two tangs, get them SMALL and realize you will eventually have to get rid of them, if they live long enough, because they will outgrow the tank. Also, if you get two tangs, do NOT get conspecific tangs. That will bring out even more aggression in the tank. This stress will also effect your other livestock.

Also, I would not have put a mandarin in your tank. Its too early. Your tank is too young and there may not be enough pods in there for it to survive. However, if you have a large, actively growing refugium, then it may last, or if you're one of those lucky people who have a mandarin that will eat flakes or pellets, then it should be fine.

You should at the very least read everything in these links before deciding:

I think you'd be ok with one tang. If you want a purple, realize their mature adult size is about 1 foot. Is it ok to keep a 1 foot long tang in a 90g tank? Your call. But most likely you will want to trade it out before it gets that big.

I do have a very active fuge, so I think the mandarin will be fine. I've only had him 7 months, but he's still got plenty of meat on him. :)

I plan on a hippo and a purple or a hippo and a kole. Since they're not conspecific, I think I'd have a better shot. What about a single hippo? Any issues there?

I have three tangs in a 150- they were fine small- but I am worried as they grow- Hippos get fairly large after several years. Biodork is right in worrying about the long run. 4 foot tanks and more mature tangs are pressing for some agression eventually even if you can keep a clip with romaine or nori consitantly filled. Any 6 foot would be much preferable for these guys, IMHO.

Excellent :)

Single tang sounds ok to me but I have no experience with hippos (other than by watching Finding Nemo . . )

I also have 3 tangs in a 150, though mine is a 5 foot. I have a yellow, a blue-eyed kole, and a hippo, and the hippo is the only one I worry about long term. I definitely would not recommend this fish for a 90, even if it was the only tang in there. They just seem to require more swimming room than the others, even discounting for size differences.

I have never owned one, but the sources I looked at put the purple tang's max length at 9-10 inches, so that was the reason for my recommendation. The tomini's are quite possibly the smallest of the tangs regularly offered for sale (max 6-7", reportedly), which seems to make them a good choice for a 2nd tang if you are on the fence about it. Any of the kole tangs would probably be a good choice, though.

I have seen very little agression b/n my three tangs - a little flashing on rare occasions, once or twice early on a small mark or two, but nothing for a long while. For the most part they get along great. FWIW, I added the hippo and the yellow at the same time, both the same size, so neither had an established territory. When I added the kole about 8 months later, I chose a fish that was slightly bigger than the hippo (who by now has outstripped the yellow). I thought this would make it a little less likely that it would get picked on by the hippo. So far this has proven to be true. The kole is very non-aggressive, so has not pressed its temporary size advantage. Probably a wise move on its part.

if i were you id get a tomini and then later if you want get a purple. For the most part - if you get two different types (acantherus sp? and zebermousa sp?) you should be ok in a 90. I def recommend against getting a hippo tang though, they need ALOT of space and alot of people end up cramping them up in smaller tanks.

I have a PBT in my 90. Everything is going great. Actually, he doesn't rule the roost like I thought a tang would do. Actually, my Magnificent Foxface is the bully. It will get agitated at a fish and show them who's boss. It is very territorial...very surprising to me. The PBT and MFF get along. At first they weren't sure of each other and were interested in the same cave. They now tolerate each other. There is a lot of posturing going on, but they get along. If I knew that was going to happen, I would have added the MFF last. I'm still waiting on a Bellus to add to the tank.

The Tomini looks promising. Do they all look like this one or is the Flame Fin a specific species?

I'll forget about the hippo tang. I wanted a more peaceful tang, but not when it'll outgrow the tank. I won't rule the purple out, but I'm now intrigued by the chevron tang. They're purdy! :fish: Would one get along with the Tomini if I end up getting a second?
