  1. Try sticking a PVC 90 ell on the intake of the pump, this will prevent the pump from sucking air from the surface. HTH Glenn
  2. Just back from meeting with the school personnel, and they assured me there is little to no chance that the county will pull the plug on this weekends activities! One other note, the Lecture Hall is located at DOOR #15 half way down the right hand side of the building. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting tomorrow! Glenn
  3. Since we are holding the meeting in a Fairfax County public school tomorrow, it is contingent upon the school system being open on Saturday. If Fairfax County Schools are closed, we will be forced to postpone the meeting. Please check here or on the radio for the status of the school system. Personally I don't think it will be an issue, BUT, the personal at both the school and the Office of Community Services cannot give me any input other than to listen to the radio.
  4. I had Scott at Marine Scene order me a 50# bag about a year ago. I think they charged me around $75 for it. Might want to talk to Mike or Grim at TRT and see if we can get a few bags and how much he would charge us.
  5. I'm needing to replace my 4" 115v fans. I used to have a link for some super quiet, high CFM fans, but can't seem to find it. Any suggestions?
  6. West Marine or Boat US may have it. Mail order will probably be cheaper, as anything having to do with a boat carries a premium price.
  7. Great! Can anyone visit Roozens & that other LFS in that area? How about Reef Tank? Also like to hit up the PetCo's
  8. We need some volunteers to deliver/hang the meeting flyers in LFS's and community bulletin boards. The flyer can be downloaded HERE: WINTER MEETING PDF If you don't have access to a color printer, let us know so we can arrange to get some printed flyers to you. Please let us know where you plan to post them and if you unable to do as planned. Thanks! Glenn
  9. Michael, Depending on what version of PhotoShop you have. In 7.0 & up there should be a save for web option under file. Try 640x480 try low or medium quality to get the file size down. If you don't have this option, or need more help. Just call me as I could spend the rest of the day trying to "type" you through it.
  10. Heard good reviews on the Remora, used and not impressed with Red Sea, no experience with the Bakpak. HTH
  11. Thanks! We found this today, and are waiting for Nathan to fix the flash graphic. There seems to be an issue with our hosting service, and we are supposed to switch both wamas.org and macnaxvii.com to a new company this week. Well, if we had it in DC proper, the cost would be about 3 time as much. The Crystal City Hyatt is on the river with a great view of the Mall. Besides, who would want to come to MACNA Alexandria? Yes, we are still working on the details, but volunteers will get a discount. Thanks! Glenn
  12. Personally I would hold off on the CA meter until it gets reviewed. As for the club getting equipment, we've talked back & forth about a light meter for members use. I'm all for it, only issue is who is going to deal with the logistics of keeping track of it, what if it disappears or gets broken etc Another project I've been pushing on, and hopefully will happen at the spring meeting, is a chemistry meeting, where we have a reef chemist do a presentation. Then we get a few brands of test kits (donated) and do a mass of water tests on members systems.
  13. I concur with all the above. Another trick to get the cycle to go faster is using established water from a running tank to do water changes with. HTH
  14. I'll second Maxi Jets and Mag's are great for submersible use. Please don't try running an Iwaki under water! :p I too had a RIO 2500 explode on me, fortunately it was in my mixing vat, but it made quite the stinking mess! The old RIO's were not UL listed, and did not have thermal protection. Without thermal protection if the pump jams, the motor keeps on trying to turn it until the pump catches on fire. From what I hear, the new RIO Hyperflow pumps are UL listed and have a thermal cut off. I did run a couple of their SEO pumps, (cheep knock-off of the Tunze Streams) they seemed fine other than the fact a standard wavemaker will cause the impellers to self destruct....
  15. Just saw this too. Randy Holmes-Farley is getting one from Lou to run through it's paces. http://reefcentral.com/forums....=511851 I sure hope it checks out, as it would be the best $250 I've spent on the tanks in a long time!
  16. Consider this hollering for any chance of getting 2, 4 & 6! They sound sweet! I do have few pieces that are starting to shape up to be quite interesting, a bright purple acro & a sweet looking table, I also have a nice M. confusa frag with your name all over it. :p
  17. This is an email that came across the Aquaticinfo email list, a listserve for professional aquarists. I would like to see WAMAS help them acquire funds & equipment to get re-established. Thanks, Glenn
  18. The location has been finalized: Kilmer Middle School 8100 Wolftrap Rd Vienna (Tysons Corner) VA, 22182
  19. Sweet! May I ask how much they charged you for it? Please mention to them (actually all local and MO stores) that you are a WAMAS member, I have talked with them about a club discount, and the more members who "bug" them about it the better!

    roozens?

Just a bit... Open shipping box Open bag Put fish in copper treated system or dip in copper bath for a few seconds and put in non-copper treated invert system. Oh, ever seen 10 tangs along with a dozen or more other fish in a 40 gal tank? And I wont mention all the IO buckets full of dead/dying fish....
  21. Thanks Bob! I remember reading the thread thinking that it sounded like too much work to be worth it, but obviously not. I might be needing to drill several tanks in the near future, and might try it. Happy Reefing! Glenn
  22. How I do it depends on the depth of the sand bed: Shallow sand 0-3" on the tank bottom or on supports Deep sand 3"+ in/on the sand
  23. Not only is it loaded in calcium, but phosphate too.
  24. The battery powered pumps will run for quite awhile on a set of batteries. If you want I can lend you a couple.
  25. You might be able to get your county to do a free water analysis for you, but don't hold me to it.
